Mystery of Grateful Dead fan missing almost 20 years

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Investigators say they are trying to determine if an unidentified man who died in a crash in Emporia, Virginia, in 1995 is a Myrtle Beach man who disappeared around that time.

Police told local media outlets that the missing man's mother filed a police report Tuesday, saying her son, Jason Callahan, left Myrtle Beach nearly 20 years ago to follow the band the Grateful Dead and hasn't been seen since.

The man found dead in the Virginia crash had Grateful Dead concert ticket stubs in his pocket. Authorities were able to identify the driver's family, but found no identification on the passenger.

Myrtle Beach Police say they have collected DNA samples to determine whether the man killed in the crash is Callahan and will await results in a few weeks.
