Murtha Says McCain "Too Old" To Be President
Pennsylvania Rep. John Murtha, a vocal opponent of the war in Iraq, a Hillary Clinton supporter and a septuagenarian himself, suggested today that John McCain is too old to be president. Murtha, 75, is four years older than McCain (who will be 72 by Election Day and would be the oldest president ever elected to a first term) and said the job is too much for someone their age. ""I've served with seven presidents," Murtha told a union gathering in Washington today. "When they come in, they all make mistakes. They all get older. This one guy running is about as old as me. … Let me tell you something, it's no old man's job." McCain has countered questions about his age by pointing to his 95 year-old mother Roberta's presence on the campaign trail and keeping a vigorous schedule. The McCain campaign responded to Murtha's comments with this statement: "This is a very unfortunate, nonsense attack. We are focused on working on the future."
