Canadian school teacher Mary Gowans has been charged with sexual assault and sexual exploitation of a former 15-year-old student, reports the Toronto Sun.
According to Toronto police, the popular 40-year-old French and gym teacher engaged in an "inappropriate relationship" with a former student at Joseph Howe Senior Public School that started in June 2009.
The student, who has not been identified, left the school two years ago and is now in the tenth grade, according to the Canadian paper.
"Our intent was not to share this with the world, but to do what we felt was right," the boy's mother told the Toronto Sun.
According to the paper, Gowans was arrested on Jan. 18 at her home, which she shares with her husband and two children. She is scheduled to appear in court March 1, 2010.
Mary Kay Letourneau gained national notoriety in 1997 when she was convicted of having a long term sexual affair with a student who was only 12 when it began. After serving 7 1/2 years in prison, she reunited with her former student. The two are married and have two children together.
