More Bad News From Iraq
This column was written by CBS News Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith.
More bad news from Iraq this week. And no, I'm not referring to the National Intelligence Estimate that says that the war in Iraq has only increased the terrorist danger.
No, this news comes in the form of a poll taken recently, which says three out of four Iraqis believe that American forces are actually causing more violence in the country than they are preventing.
Three and a half years into the war, should we be surprised that the Iraqis, whose streets are lethally dangerous and who can't even count on a couple of hours of electricity a day, think they'd be better off without the Americans?
The enmity toward Americans has grown to the point that nearly two-thirds of the Iraqis polled approve of attacks on Americans. Two-thirds approve of attacks on Americans. If you are an American on patrol in Baghdad today it would be hard not to wonder, "What am I doing here?"
