Mom shares first photos of surviving conjoined twin
The Minnesota mother who gave birth to conjoined twins two weeks ago has shared the first photos of the surviving baby.
Amber McCullough delivered twin girls, Hannah and Olivia, by cesarean section on August 26 at the Colorado Fetal Care Center at Children's Hospital Colorado. Because of how the babies were conjoined, sharing an abdomen, liver and intestinal tract, and the severity of Olivia's heart condition, the doctors needed to perform surgery to separate them immediately. As they expected, only one of the twins, Hannah, survived the operation.
McCullough shared a photo of Hannah in the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) "tucked in for the night." She described the experience as "not for the faint of heart" and "terrifying."
Earlier this week, she updated her GoFundMe page with another photo of the sleeping baby with a "more comfy blanket."
McCullough announced in the post that her fundraising goal had been met and encouraged people to make donations to Children's Hospital of Colorado, Ronald McDonald House of Aurora, and/or Prenatal Partners for Life.
"Without Children's Hospital of CO neither of my daughters would have had a chance," she wrote. "I truly consider this place to be a miracle factory full of compassion. Ronald McDonald House and Prenatal Partners for life have also been vital supports in our journey."
