Molly Ringwald, Juliette Lewis join "Jem and the Holograms" film cast

Molly Ringwald and Juliette Lewis were both child stars in the 1980s, and now they're both set to star in a film based on one of the most popular animated series from that decade.

The two actresses have signed on to appear in the upcoming "Jem and the Holograms" live-action film adaptation, as per the Los Angeles Times.

The film is to be set in the present day, offering up a modern take on the Hasbro series, which centered on Jerrica Benton, a music executive who uses a holographic computer system to secretly pose as a rock star named Jem.

In April, Aubrey Peeples was officially cast in the title role, with actor Ryan Guzman signing on as love interest Rio.

It's unclear what roles Ringwald and Lewis will be playing.

The film will be directed by Jon M. Chu ("G.I. Joe: Retaliation"), who took to Twitter on Monday to share his excitement over having Lewis join the cast:

The following day, Chu sent some love to Ringwald, with a tease included to his followers:

"Jem and the Holograms" is expected to arrive in theaters in 2016.
