Meeting The New Junior Miss

This column was written by CBS News Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith.

I got to meet to new Junior Miss this week, a lovely young woman from Utah who is headed off to Harvard in the fall. She has pretty much perfect grades, played varsity basketball and tennis, is an accomplished pianist and danced with the Joffrey Ballet in New York a couple of summers ago.

Her parents, I'm sure are terribly proud. But she insisted that she was not all that exceptional among her seven siblings. She is composed, articulate, and even self deprecating. All of which made me think of my teenage boys, great kids, funny, smart, engaging… But definitely not headed to Harvard with 62,000 dollars in scholarships.

I love my boys…but they stopped taking piano lessons long before they mastered Franz Liszt…and something tells me their idea of a good time would not include studying biochemistry with the hope of inventing disease curing drugs. I am envious I admit, but inspired now too. And I swear I'm going to get my boys to clean up their rooms today.
