McStay murder suspect wants to see more evidence

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - A man charged with killing a San Diego County family whose bodies were found buried in the desert is asking the prosecution to turn over more evidence.

Charles "Chase" Merritt is representing himself in court.

U-T San Diego reports Merritt told a judge Monday that he has seen about a third of the evidence that could be used against him.

Prosecutors said Merritt should have all of the evidence - some 9,000 pages worth - by the end of the week.

The 57-year-old Merritt has pleaded not guilty to murder.

Forty-year-old Joseph McStay, his 43-year-old wife Summer and their sons, 4-year-old Gianni and 3-year-old Joseph Jr., disappeared from their Fallbrook, Caliufornia home in 2010.

Merritt was a business associate of Joseph McStay.

The disappearance was investigated as a missing-persons case for more than three years until the family's remains were found in 2013 in shallow graves in the Mojave Desert, about 100 miles north of where the family lived.

Merritt was arrested in November of last year.
