"This is a family incident," said Harrison Police Capt. Anthony Marraccini, allaying fears that the slaying at the college, located in Purchase, N.Y., about 27 miles northeast of Manhattan, was the act of a random campus killer.

The 18-year-old student was described by classmates as a popular member of the school volleyball team, and Crimesider has learned that she was the daughter of a college maintenance worker.

A source at the college told the Journal News that Pagli's mother was found unconscious at the scene and transported to White Plains Hospital.

A hospital spokesperson confirmed that a woman with the mother's name was in the emergency room but would not release any information about her condition, according to the paper.

Marraccini said police were not searching for a suspect but wouldn't elaborate further.

"We are being so cautious because it is a serious crime and tragic circumstance," he said. "Before we make any conclusions or arrests we have to ensure the integrity of the investigation is safe."
