(CBS/AP) KATY, Texas - A man who shot and killed his estranged wife as she arrived to work at a Houston-area high school Friday committed suicide after a police standoff, authorities say, according to CBS affiliate KHOU.

The Katy school district says the woman, identified by police as 46-year-old Valerie Robinson, was shot in the back after arriving at Tompkins High School about 6 a.m. Friday. An announcement on the school's website says the woman worked in the school cafeteria.

Witnesses said they first heard a "pop," then saw a man with a shotgun leave the scene in a truck, reports KHOU. He reportedly fled to his home in Brookshire and barricaded himself inside. Authorities surrounded the home and after a few hours, police confirmed the man had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
