For Hugh Evans, conquering world hunger started at the age of 14.

"I was given the opportunity to go the Philippines with an organization called World Vision," Evans said. "And one night we were taken onto a slum in the center of Manila called Smokey Mountain, and I was placed in the care of a kid my own age named Sonny Boy. He was also 14 years old.

"And that night when it came time to go to sleep, we literally laid down on this garbage dump with cockroaches crawling all around us and the smell of rubbish all around us, and I just thought that night, I thought, it really is pure chance that I was born where I was born and he was born where he was born."

So Evans dedicated his life to helping the 1.2 billion people still living in extreme poverty. He is the co-founder of Global Citizen and the CEO of the Global Poverty Project. His goal is to end world poverty by 2030.

He's doing so through an annual live concert called the Global Citizen Festival. Last year, 60,000 people attended. This year, the Sept. 27 show in Central Park has a host committee of Hugh Jackman, Katie Holmes, Olivia Wilde and "CBS This Morning" co-host Gayle King. Jay-Z, No Doubt, Fun., Tiesto and Carrie Underwood are headliners.

People who want a free ticket to the concert have to go to globalcitizenfestival.com to earn their points. They can do so by signing petitions, tweeting at world leaders and watching educational videos.

"If we truly want to end extreme poverty for 1.2 billion people on this planet, we need business, we need government at the table," Evans said. "And that's what the Global Citizen Festival does. We're building the largest possible movement to convince business and government to take lead on this issue."
