James Corden making "Late Late Show" debut

James Corden's road to hosting "The Late Late Show" 06:11

James Corden wants you to stay up late with him.

The British star is just hours away from officially beginning his tenure as host of CBS' "Late Late Show," stepping into the role previously held by Craig Ferguson.

Corden has a pair of A-listers lined up as his first guests -- Tom Hanks, and Mila Kunis, who seemed to come clean about some big news during her appearance on the show.

In a clip from the premiere episode released Monday, the actress demurred when asked whether she and Ashton Kutcher are married ("Maybe," she said coyly). But Cordon pressed her -- "Either you're married or you're not" -- and she eventually produced her wedding finger, which indeed has a ring on it. (Is that confirmation? The cheering audience seems to think so.)

Another funny sketch released Monday, showing Corden running into some trouble with security after forgetting his ID badge, acknowledges that his name might not be familiar to viewers on this side of the Atlantic (though he's had recent roles in films like "Into the Woods" and "Begin Again").

"It's different than everything I've ever done," the 36-year-old actor admitted in an interview with "CBS This Morning." "I've never done this. I don't even really know what I'm about to do. I'm talking like I have any authority on this. I know nothing."

But he's gotten support from someone who does know a thing or two about hosting a late-night show. On Monday, Corden tweeted a photo of a card sent by former "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno.

"The Late Late Show with James Corden" airs at 12:35 a.m. ET on CBS, right after the "Late Show With David Letterman."
