Harry Smith: "Life Abounds" in Haiti

One full week after that devastating earthquake that rocked Haiti, most efforts are focused on getting aid to survivors. It's estimated that 200,000 people were killed, 250,000 injured and 1.5 million left homeless.

"Early Show" co-anchor Harry Smith traveled to Port-au-Prince, Haiti to see the destruction -- and the life that still goes on in the devastated country's capital.

Smith observed that the streets of Port-au-Prince don't shut down at night. In fact, he found they tend to come alive with candles and lamps in the enduring electricity outage.

Smith found a woman who cooked eggs and batter over a coal fire.

"There's a kind of commerce, a kind of a sense that life is going on somehow," Smith observed.

In a tent city, Smith went to the home of Sebastian, a man who showed CBS around the city.

"Everybody here is homeless," Sebastian told Smith. "And they are trying to make something out of nothing."

"They sure did," Smith replied, observing the .

An estimated 50,000 people have thrown up makeshift shelters -- and for now, they call it home.

Smith noted, "Life abounds."
