Girl, 16, charged with fatally stabbing mother's boyfriend

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Police have charged a 16-year-old girl with murder after officials say she fatally stabbed her mother's boyfriend, according to CBS affiliate WBTV. Neighbors say the girl was acting in self- defense.

Police responded to a domestic-related assault call around 2 a.m. Wednesday just outside uptown Charlotte. When officers arrived, the station reports, they found Omar Dunbar with multiple stab wounds. Medics pronounced Dunbar dead at the scene.

Detectives interviewed the girl, who reportedly lived at the house and knew Dunbar. WBTV reports that Dunbar was there visiting his girlfriend, the teen's mother.

"From what I've heard he was abusing her brother and she was trying to protect her brother," a neighbor who didn't want to be identified told WBTV. According to neighbors, when she tried to stop it he turned on the her - even spitting on her.

The girl allegedly snapped and grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed him before running to a neighbor's house.

Detectives found Dunbar's body in the kitchen and charged the teen with murder.

"I don't think she deserves what they're trying to charge her with because she was just protecting her little brothers," Frederick Monroe, who attends high school with the girl, told the station.

The 16-year-old made a first court appearance in shackles Thursday, and is due back in court July 29.

Multiple neighbors told WBTV that Dunbar had a history of abusing his girlfriend's children and that the children often roam the neighborhood in search of food.
