Freezing temps, snow hit Midwest, Northeast early

NEW YORK - Snow and freezing temps came unusually early for parts of the Midwest and much of the Northeast this year.

Freeze warnings were issued across the Tennessee Valley, the Mid-Atlantic and the Ohio Valley.

Across much of upstate New York and New England, a dusting of snow fell. Pittsburg, N.H., reported a midday total of 1 inch of snow. Mount Washington, N.H., recorded a morning low of 5 degrees with a wind chill factor of -23 degrees.

CBS Boston reports the city saw temperatures of 31 degrees Monday morning, the earliest they've seen a freezing temperature in October since 1979.

In the tri-state area around New York, some places saw temperatures falling to the upper-20s and lower 30s overnight, reports CBS New York.

The cold weather had people digging into their closets for their winter weather gear for the first time this season.

"I'm actually not ready," Liz Ramamurthy, of New York City, said. "I need to get a coat, I got rid of my coat last year."

Most of the regions affected by the cold snap are expected to return to relatively moderate temperatures as the week progresses.
