5 college football players arrested for alleged street fight

CALIFORNIA, Pa. -- Five members of the California University of Pennsylvania football team have been arrested and charged with involvement in a street fight outside a restaurant, reports CBS Pittsburgh.

The five accused players from the state university in southwestern Pennsylvania are James Williamson, Corey Ford, Jonathan Barlow, Rodney Gillin and D'Andre Dunkley, according to the station. They were all suspended from the university and the team on Thursday.

A witness told CBS Pittsburgh that the men jumped another man outside a restaurant, beating him until he lost consciousness. The victim, identified as Lewis Campbell, was flown to a nearby hospital, where he remains in the ICU with a severe brain injury.

Police told The Associated Press that the players had attacked Campbell, 30, after he tried to stop an argument between a player and his girlfriend. By the time the police had arrived, the suspects had fled in a car -- yelling, "football strong."

The students were arrested and charged with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, harassment and conspiracy, according to CBS Pittsburgh.

They are being held in Washington County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

California University of Pennsylvania announced that Saturday's game against Gannon University has been cancelled.

Students told CBS Pittsburgh that the attack was "terrible" and "unfortunate."

"There's a lot of good people on the football team," said student Michael Brunson, adding that he though cancelling the game punishes other players and the fans.

Interim University President Geraldine Jones said in a statement that the students charged will face university sanctions.

"Our hearts and our prayers go out to the victim, his family and his friends. All else pales in comparison," Jones said in the statement.
