Feds probing Ga. raid that left toddler injured

ATLANTA - Federal prosecutors say they're reviewing a law enforcement raid on a northeast Georgia home that seriously injured a toddler when a flash grenade detonated in his playpen.

A grand jury announced Monday that it decided against filing charges in the May raid that injured Boukham Phonesavanh, who was 19 months old at the time.

U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia Sally Quillian Yates said Tuesday that federal authorities are now reviewing the case for possible federal charges.

While executing a warranty, members of a law enforcement task force looking for a drug suspect threw the flash grenade into the Habersham County home where the boy was staying. The suspect wasn't in the house at the time.

CBS Atlanta reports the grand jury found that the drug investigation leading up to the raid was hurried and sloppy. The grand jury said the tragedy happened, in part, because well-intentioned people were in too big of a hurry to consider the consequences of their actions, reports the station.

Mawuli Mel Davis, an attorney for the Phonesavanh family, released a statement regarding the grand jury's decision not to indict, saying, "This is a sad day for this family and for the people of Georgia."
