'Fashion Rocks' For Victims

Some of the biggest names in show business are coming together to provide Katrina victims "Shelter From The Storm" in a live telethon Friday night. But stars are taking every opportunity they can to help in other venues.

On Thursday night, CBS used "Fashion Rocks," the gala entertainment special that kicks off Fashion Week in New York City, to aid victims of the hurricane

"Fashion Rocks" host Mark McGrath, told The Early Show co-anchor Julie Chen, "The artists have all said we don't want to do this unless the people can give something back and the artists can give something back. And it's turned into a real humanitarian effort."

Models and musicians taking the stage were looking to entertain as well as raise funds for those left in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

From Radio City Music Hall, model Tyra Banks pointed out, "You know we're sitting here on the red carpet, and we're all glamorous, and there are people who have lost every single thing."

And Simon Le Bon of Duran Duran said, "That's what counts. You see a lot of very lost and confused people, and we want to help them."

CBS airs the two-hour special Sept. 9 at 9 p.m. ET following a live telethon, which will be carried by PBS and all six major networks.

The hour-long "Shelter From The Storm: A Concert For The Gulf Coast" features performances by Sheryl Crow and Neil Young. Also scheduled to appear and appeal for donations is talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.

DeGeneres, said, "I'm from New Orleans. My family is in Mississippi. They've lost everything; my friends lost everything and now I just feel numb."

Friday night's telethon was pulled together by the same producers of "America: A Tribute To Heroes" which benefited the victims of Sept. 11 in 2001. That telethon was seen by more than 59 million viewers and raised more than $150 million.

And the major networks won't be the only place to catch top talent helping to raise money. BET is the first place to tune in. That telethon, the network's first ever, begins Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ET.

In addition to the Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson, viewers can catch the first of three performances of the night from Alicia Keys, who has agreed to participate in every televised effort.

Keys said, "I'm happy they asked me because every day I am saying to myself, 'My God, what can I do to be more helpful and more efficient? And really make an impact so that these people, our people, our human family can heal."
