FAMU Hazing Update: Rikki Wills, roommate of deceased drum major Robert Champion, pleads no contest to hazing

(CBS/AP) TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Rikki Wills, the roommate of Florida A&M drum major Robert Champion, who died after a hazing ritual in November 2011, pleaded no contest to hazing charges Friday.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Wills, 25, maintained that he tried to protect Champion from the brutal beating inflicted upon him.

At a status hearing on Friday, prosecutors dismissed a manslaughter charge against Wills.

The Sentinel reported that Wills was supposed to stand trial on Monday but he accepted a plea from prosecutors who want to use his testimony to build the case against the 11 remaining defendants in the case.

Champion was beaten to death by band mates during a hazing ritual known as "Crossing Bus C" after the Florida Classic football game, reports the paper. The incident led to the suspension of FAMU's band, the Marching 100.

The Sentinel said that Wills will be sentenced on June 7th. Assistant State Attorney Nicole Pegues said that he will not go to jail.
