Editorial: The Lamron's Endorsement: Barack Obama

With the election fast approaching, The Lamron has chosen to follow in the footsteps of respectable newspapers everywhere and endorse a potential president.

For the editorial board of The Lamron to endorse a presidential nominee, the candidate must not only represent the interests of the American people in general, but also those of our college population specifically. It's with this in mind that we heartily back Sen. Barack Obama for president of the United States.

Obama's candidacy represents a shift in the fundamental demographic of the United States. He's proven that our generation, raised to value racial equality and lofty ideals, is coming to the fore and that, sooner rather than later, we will be at the helm of this country.

His policies reflect the views of a younger generation already tired of war and worried about debt that our children and grandchildren will be paying off. He's promised to end the war and attempt to fix the economy, to confront foreign leaders in diplomacy rather than in combat, and to use the power of government to help those who are incapable of helping themselves.

Much ado has been made over Obama's idealism; perhaps that is why we want him. Practical or not, it's refreshing and heartening to the voting public to encounter a candidate who speaks honestly and eloquently about following the ideals that have defined America since its inception.

This race has become a contest between the old and the new, with the McCain-Palin ticket representing an era that many, especially among our peers, see as bygone and obsolete. We don't want "Wasilla-Main-Street values," we don't need a general to contain the jihad, and we certainly don't want to be told by the government how to live our lives.

We do, however, seek change: a change of foreign policy, a change of economic policy and a change in the regime that has brought this country trillions of dollars of debt, a shattered global reputation, thousands of dead soldiers and, most importantly, a diminishing national self respect and sense of patriotism.

America is a great country, but it can be better. We think Barack Obama knows how to make it happen, so we're going to pin our hopes on him.
