Dog dodges death after devouring ecstasy pills

A dog nearly died after devouring a bag full of ecstasy pills left behind on the street, according to an animal welfare charity in the United Kingdom.

The People's Dispensary for Sick Animals reports that a 17-month-old whippet named Blue was out for a walk with his owner when he came across a bag full of heart-shaped tablets. After gobbling up the pills, the dog became unsteady and began foaming at the mouth.

The frantic owner took Blue to a PDSA hospital in Bradford, where vets rushed to save the dog.

"When Blue arrived, his condition was critical. He'd collapsed and the toxins were causing organ failure. He was admitted and life-saving treatment was started straight away," PDSA head nurse Miriam Wilson said. "Blue was put on an IV drip and received activated charcoal to absorb the toxins. Without the treatment, he would not have survived the night."

PDSA reports that Blue is now "back to his lively self."

The incident was reported to the police, who disposed of the drugs.

Wilson urged pet owners everywhere to take quick action if they suspect their animals have eaten something they shouldn't.

"There are lots of hidden dangers around the home and garden, as well as out in the wider world, that our pets may sniff out," Wilson said. "If you think they have swallowed something then get it checked at once."
