Cops: N.C. man zip-ties, kicks four-year-old daughter

Marlaine Coffey / Gerald Swinehart WRBL

(CBS) RALEIGH, NC - Authorities said a Raleigh man zip-tied his 4-year-old daughter to a child safety gate and then kicked her before fleeing to Florida with his girlfriend, reports CBS affiliate WRBL

A Wake County district attorney reportedly said the man, Gerald Swinehart, kicked his daughter so hard that her teeth broke through her lower lip.

According to arrest warrants, the incident happened earlier this year. The child was taken into the custody of social services March 31, reports the station.

Swinehart's girlfriend, 28-year-old Marlaine Coffey, allegedly checked the child into a hospital using a fake name, reports the station. The couple reportedly then fled to Florida where they were captured.

Coffey has been charged with one count of intentional child abuse inflicting serious physical injury. Swinehart, 26, faces two counts of the same charge.

Coffey is being held on $50,000 bond and Swinehart is being held on $100,000 bond.  A judge ordered that Swinehart remain in home confinement if he posts bail, reports the station.
