California man and his mother charged in girl's death

SACRAMENTO -- A mother and her son are facing charges related to the death of a 6-year-old girl, whose burned body was found May 28 about 90 miles from her Sacramento home.

Prosecutors say Juan Rivera, 25, killed Jadianna Larsen using a blunt-force instrument and that his mother, Lisa Burton, 46, was an accessory after the fact. Burton is accused of attempting to help Rivera escape arrest, CBS Sacramento reports.

Rivera was the boyfriend of Jadianna's mother, Tanecia Clark. Family members say Clark was away for mental health treatment when her 6-year-old daughter went missing.

Rivera initially told investigators he suffered a nine-hour bout of seizures Thursday and that when it was over, he noticed Jadianna was missing.

Barton and Rivera will next appear in court June 12.
