(CBS/AP) NEW YORK - The mother of Brandon Woodard, the Los Angeles man who was ambushed and killed in Manhattan during broad daylight, says New York City detectives were unable to find any drugs, weapons or evidence in her son's condo in California.

Sandra Wellington told The New York Times that the detective returned the key to Woodard's apartment and told her they "found nothing."

She said the detectives told her they were working day and night on the case. One detective told her "they were very close."

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said on Thursday that police hadn't identified any suspects in Monday's slaying or determined why he was targeted. Police are still examining three phones carried by Woodard when he flew to New York on Sunday. The reason for his flight remains unclear.
