John Boehner to hit the trail for House candidates

Reince Priebus, chair of the Republican National Committee, warned against the actions some GOP operatives are taking to recruit a possible third-party candidate in a bid to block Donald Trump from the White House

Former House Speaker John Boehner will campaign for House Republicans this summer on a cross-country road trip, according to Politico.

The Republican will start the bus trip in New Jersey and go all the way to Washington state on the trip called "Freedom One," according to the report on Monday. His trip will begin after the Republican National Convention in Cleveland this July and end Labor Day weekend.

As speaker of the House, Boehner would often go on these summer trips to actively campaign for Republicans. This summer, he already has a dozen events scheduled for incumbent House Republicans, the report said.

"The August bus trips aboard Freedom One became an annual ritual during his years in office," David Schnittger, a longtime aide to Boehner who now serves as his spokesman, told Politico. "He liked getting out into congressional districts around the country, talking to people and helping his colleagues. It's not something he has to do anymore -- but he likes doing it, and there's still a demand for it, so why not keep doing it? It's just a part of who he is."

Boehner has slowly returned to the public spotlight and political scene since he resigned from Congress last October. On Sunday, he delivered a commencement address at the University of Notre Dame where he jointly accepted the Laetare Medal with Vice President Joe Biden.

At a financial industry conference in Las Vegas last week, Boehner said Donald Trump can win the general election in November.

"Anyone who thinks Donald Trump can't win, just watch," Boehner said at the SALT Conference.

Boehner said he is supporting Trump even though he disagrees with the GOP presumptive nominee on foreign policy.

Late last month, Boehner blasted Ted Cruz, who was still in the presidential race at the time, at Stanford University. He called the Texas senator "Lucifer in the flesh" and a "miserable son of a bitch."
