Black Friday shooting outside N.J. mall leaves man dead, brother injured

MAYS LANDING, N.J. -- Authorities say a man was fatally shot and his brother was wounded in the parking lot of a mall in southern New Jersey early on Black Friday.

Atlantic County Prosecutor Diane Ruberton said that the shooting happened around 1 a.m. Friday outside the Macy’s store of the Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing. The Macy’s store had opened at 5 p.m. Thursday. The mall, which was open from 7 p.m. to midnight Thursday, reopened at 6 a.m. for Black Friday shoppers.

Ruberton says a 20-year-old Atlantic City man was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim’s 26-year-old brother, from Clayton, was shot in the leg and listed in stable condition at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.

Officials didn’t immediately say what sparked the shooting or if they had any suspects.

More than 15 evidence markers were laid down in the parking lot and an SUV with bullet holes was towed away around 7 a.m. Friday.

Investigators were also seen picking up several shopping bags that had been left in the parking lot, reports CBS Philly.

Shoppers who arrived early Friday – the biggest shopping day of the year – were shocked by the scene.

“It’s very scary,” as shopper told the station. “You’re starting off the holiday season and you’re excited about the upcoming times with family and now there’s going to be family who are missing people, and their holidays will never be the same.”
