Best things to buy in April

(MoneyWatch) April may be the cruelest month, but not when it comes to deals. Spring weather, graduations, and the upcoming wedding season lead retailers to offer bargains on a wide range of goods and services.

Here are some of the best things to buy in April, according to savings expert Jeanette Pavini of Coupons.com:

Summer air travel. Around mid-April, you're likely to find some of the best airfares for peak summer travel in July and August, Pavini says. The majority of airfare sales begin on Tuesday and run through Thursday, and the best time to buy is on a Tuesday at 4 p.m. Eastern. Try to travel on a Tuesday or Wednesday to save even more.

Flea markets and consignment shops. Spring cleaning brings an "out with the old" mentality, so expect to see more garage sales, flea markets, and perhaps better stocked thrift and consignment shops. For the best selection of items, visit flea markets on opening weekend.

Athletic shoes. Sneaker sales slump during the winter months, but the return of spring means retailers will be pushing athletic shoes, Pavini says. Look for promotions and coupons as the weather improves.

Vacuum cleaners. Last year's vacuum models go on sale in honor of spring cleaning and to make room for new models that are usually released around June.

Graduation and wedding gifts. The end of the school year and the beginning of the nuptials season means anything likely to make a good graduation or wedding present will probably go on sale this month, Pavini says. Think cookware, china, and small kitchen appliances, such as blenders and coffee makers.
