Author L. Frank Baum's hometown celebrates all things "Oz"

(CBS News) "Oz The Great and Powerful," a new prequel to the "The Wizard of Oz" opened in theaters Friday night, 113 years after the publication of L. Frank Baum's book.

The original "Wizard of Oz" movie is widely considered the most-watched film in American history, setting the standard for all the sequels, prequels and spin-offs. Disney just opened with its latest take on the Oz franchise, and a group of fans got a special opportunity because of where they live.

Baum's life and work is the centerpiece of Chittenango, N.Y., from antique shops to the annual "Oz-travaganza," a three-day block party and parade that attracts Baum fans from around the globe.

The village also has its own yellow brick road, and if you follow it all the way, you'll end up at All Things Oz, "where Oz all began."

Barbara Evans is one of the curators of the museum.

One of the items she called "fun" was the notice for Baum's fifth wedding anniversary. "They were still here in the area," Evans said.

Along with the memorabilia, All Things Oz offers some life lessons.

"We teach our kids through Baum a lot of different things. It's OK to be born in a small town and go out and do great things," Evans said.

And that's been proven, from Broadway spinoffs "The Wiz" and "Wicked" to Disney's latest movie.
