But the marketing folks in Anaheim have outdone themselves - Angels fans on Tuesday night set a Guinness world record for most costume masks worn at one gathering. Yes, most costume masks worn at one gathering.
The dubious mark was set in the fifth inning of the Angels-White Sox game when nearly 25,000 donned red wrestling masks for 10 minutes (the halo-logo masks were conveniently given to them as they entered the turnstiles).
Amanda Mochan of Guinness conceded "costume masks" was a new category and estimated only 250 were needed to set the record.
"As long as something is measurable, breakable and interesting, then we're definitely open to taking a look at it," Mochan said. "And this fits all of those criteria."
We're not sure if it fits that last criteria but you can't argue with the results. The team ranks fourth in Major League Baseball in attendance (averaging nearly 40,000 a game) so the Angels promotions department must be doing something right,
No word on whether the thunderstick-wielding rally monkey wore a wrestling mask.
