(CBS/AP) WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. - A central South Carolina police officer has been charged with sending explicit photos of himself to a 13-year-old girl in Iowa.

Authorities said Wednesday Andrew Alan Haney, 31, has been charged with interstate commerce of obscene materials to a person under 16.

According to CBS affiliate WLTX, a criminal complaint stated that the girl's mother discovered the photos on a tablet computer in her daughter's room. When the mom asked about it, the girl reportedly said that she used the device to talk to men on the internet.

Police say Haney met the girl online last month.

Authorities say they identified Haney as a suspect after he sent the girl a photo with his police badge with the state seal visible in the photo.

West Columbia Police Chief Dennis Tyndall says Haney has been fired from the force. Haney was expected in court Thursday.

Haney had been an officer for two years, according to the station.
