Analysis Paralysis? How "Quant"

The cure for analysis paralysis, says Andrew Hines, is OR, or operations research, a set of deep data mining and analytics techniques. OR has helped mighty Proctor & Gamble --- a company so huge it all but boasts its own weather system --- to continue to win in just about every arena. If OR is good enough for P&G-- well, you do the math.

The propeller-heads doing the OR math are called "quants," and they use powerful computing to quickly predict winners in branding, materials sourcing, finance, inventory and organization. Your average weathermen these folks are not.
