Afghan officials found to have walked away from Colorado training

DENVER - State records show that two Afghan prison officials have walked away from a training program in Colorado in the past 13 months.

The Denver Post reported Monday that one of the unidentified men left the International Correctional Management Training Center in Canon City in September 2013. The other disappeared in February.

State and federal officials refused to release the names of the men, saying their families could face retaliation for working for prison reform.

The Colorado corrections department says the men passed background checks and didn't pose a threat.

However, Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob Beauprez criticized the department, saying it should be more concerned with the safety of Coloradans.

The response was different than that in Massachusetts, where authorities released the names and photos of three Afghan soldiers who went missing there in September.

The trio were caught a short time later at the Canadian border.

Also last month, two Afghan police officers who were training with the DEA vanished while on a trip to Washington. The police officers were located in Buffalo.
