Adrian Navarro-Canales Update: Nev. teen makes first court appearance in slayings of mother and brother
(CBS/AP) LAS VEGAS - Las Vegas-area teenager Adrian Navarro-Canales has made his first appearance before a judge on charges of murdering his mother and younger brother a few days after celebrating his 16th birthday.
Navarro-Canales was shackled Monday and nodded to signal he understood the charges against him. He said little else as a Henderson justice of the peace scheduled a preliminary hearing for Oct. 30.
The prosecutor and the teen's appointed public defender did not comment outside court.
Henderson police found the bodies of Elvira Canales-Gomez and 9-year-old Cesar Navarro on Sept. 20 in the bathroom of their apartment.
Navarro-Canales was sought for several days before he was found last week sitting in an open-air food court on the Las Vegas Strip.
The teen was first sought as a possible victim but was then named as the prime suspect in the slayings.
He is being tried as an adult.
