A Moratorium On Clinton Bashing?

Whatever the eventual fallout of former president Clinton's pardon of Marc Rich, there's no doubt there will be far greater damage than Bill Clinton imagined.

The same obviously was true of his relationship with Monica Lewinsky.

And yet the former president must have somehow imagined he was going to get away with all of this Marc and Monica mess.

One of the president's explanations about the Marc Rich pardon was "I was making a gesture to Israel." He was the sixth most wanted fugitive on the FBI's list! Find another gesture.

Having said all that, I believe the former president will rise again in the public's esteem.

The way I look at it is if every public official was judged by the worst thing you can say about them, very few would survive that test.

Also the degree of attention on President Clinton by the media has been astonishing. Every few months I check in on Rush Limbaugh, a world class Clinton basher, to see how long I can listen to his radio show. Not being a big fan of Clinton bashing or bashing of anyone for that matter, it's usually not very long. I was truly relieved to hear Rush talking about the dedication of a new aircraft carrier named after President Reagan.

"Oh good," I thought. "It's not about Clinton." Rush said Mrs. Reagan would christen the carrier.

Rush then compared the length of the carrier first to a football field, and then to the distance President Clinton had to travel to first meet up with Monica Lewinsky.

So obviously President Clinton hasn't gotten away with anything. But as proven by the country's response to the impeachment, his adversaries don't really get away with their never-ending assaults either.

Ultimately, there really are more important things for us to focus on.
