Jim Murphy was named senior broadcast producer of 48 Hours in July 1997. He had previously served as executive producer of the innovative This Morning broadcast, which debuted in August 1996, and the CBS Morning News. He had been senior broadcast producer of This Morning (1993-1994), overseeing the broadcast's day-to-day operations.

Murphy joined CBS News and This Morning in January 1993 as a broadcast producer and segment producer. He had previously been supervising producer and director of the nationally syndicated television program Siskel and Ebert (1988-1993).

In 1986, Murphy joined WCBS-TV, the CBS-owned television station in New York, as producer of its Channel 2 News at Six. From 1981 to 1986, he worked at WABC-TV New York, where he was a news producer.

Murphy began his broadcasting career in 1977 at WPIX-TV New York as an intern and desk assistant and later became a writer and producer. He is the recipient of three local New York Emmy awards.

Murphy was born on July 26, 1960 in Queens, New York. He attended Queens College and Fordham University.
