100-year-old Chicago teacher dies after long career

A 100-year-old taught at a Chicago school until the day she died, CBS Chicago reports.

Ashburn Lutheran School in Chicago's South Side bid farewell to their oldest teacher, Olivia Neubauer. The head of the school said she died in her sleep Sunday after a brief illness.

Neubauer's teaching career began in 1935, 13 presidential administrations ago. She took 10 years off to raise her children and had been teaching young children how to read at Ashburn Lutheran for 47 years.

"I've been blessed," she told the CBS "Evening News" back in 2007, when she was 95 years old. "It's been a real, beautiful life. I really have enjoyed life and I've enjoyed the children all the way through."

Just before her 100th birthday in March, the seasoned educator told WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger she never imagined she'd be teaching so long.

When asked if she ever planned to retire, Neubauer said the Lord would tell her when to quit.
