CBS DC

(CBS) ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Police arrested and charged Arlington County sheriff's deputy Craig Patterson with murder on Thursday night after he allegedly shot a 22-year-old man, said CBS DC.

The station reported that, according to police, the 44-year-old suspect was arrested at his home in Spotsylvania County, about 65 miles southwest of Wash., D.C.

Police said the victim, Julian Dawkins, and Patterson, got into a confrontation on May 22, during which Patterson fatally shot Dawkins, CBS DC reported.

Family members told the station that Dawkins was celebrating his cousin making the Washington Mystics roster, DC's WNBA team, on the night he was shot. However,  police have not confirmed this.

Authorities said Patterson, who has been on the force for 17 years, has been placed on administrative leave.
