Obama to Veterans: "America Will Not Let You Down"

President Obama spoke in honor of Veterans Day at Arlington National Cemetery Wednesday morning, vowing to keep "the promises we've made" to those who have served their country.

"America will not let you down," he said. "We will take care of our own."

Before he spoke at the Memorial Amphitheater, Mr. Obama participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns. He was joined at Arlington by first lady Michelle Obama.

"To the members of our armed forces and the veterans who are here today, I am deeply honored and humbled to spend Veterans Day with you in this sacred place, where generations of heroes have come to rest and generations of Americans have come to show their gratitude," the president said.

He spoke of his experiences at the memorial service for those killed in the Fort Hood shootings, saying he saw determination in the eyes of the soldiers there, as he has in the eyes of American military personnel around the world.

"In an era where so many acted only in pursuit of narrow self-interests, they've chosen the opposite," said Mr. Obama. "They chose to serve the cause that is greater than self, many even after they knew they'd be sent into harm's way."

The president told veterans, the fallen and their families that "no praise that can truly match the magnitude of your service and your sacrifice."

He went on to say that while marking Veterans Day is important, "it is far more important we spend all our days determined to keep the promises that we've made to all who answer this country's call." He said obligations to veterans don't end when they take off their uniform.

"If we're honest with ourselves, we will admit there have been times where we, as a nation, have betrayed that sacred trust," Mr. Obama said, pointing to the treatment of Vietnam veterans, who he said "often came home greeted not with gratitude or support but with condemnation and neglect."

"To them and to all who have served, in every battle, in every war, we say that it's never too late to say thank you," he said. "We honor your service. We are forever grateful."

The president had this message to those now serving: "When your tour ends, when you see our flag, when you touch our soil, you will be home in an America that is forever here for you, just as you have been there for us. That is my promise, our nation's promise, to you."

At the beginning of his remarks, the president thanked Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill for attending the ceremony. He noted that their son Beau recently returned from Iraq.

"There will be a day, before long, when this generation of servicemen and women step out of uniform," he said. "They will build families and lives of their own. God willing, they will grow old. And someday, their children and their children's children will gather here to honor them."

Before leaving Arlington, the Obamas stopped at an area of the cemetery reserved for Iraq War dead, where they conferred with families visiting gravesites of loved ones.

The White House confirmed to CBS News that this marked the first time a president had walked among the gravesites in the area, which is known as Section 60.

Our military should be 100% focused on defense, not offense or nation building. When foreigners wish to invade the USA, our military should be there to prevent it and that includes illegal immigrants.

What it should not include are wars for other interests such Israel. Israel has their problems and they shouldn't become our problems, but the Israel Lobby forces them to become our problems. I don't buy into it and neither should Americans.

America will not let you down but Obama will and already has let you down. He has tried to cut your benefits, he refuses to make a decision on Afganistan at your expense in order to pass his healthcare plan we could care less about. He continues to drive this country to poverty and is a reflection of his mentor and pastor.

Obama is running America to the tune of Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter held out peace towards muslims when Iran took hundreds of us hostage. He couldn't get them out. Reagan came in and cleaned up the mess. We need another Reagan and soon. Obama loves Allah and that is who we are fighting. We aren't fighting any nation, we are fighting what motivates Islamic radicles and that is Allah. That is why Ft. Hood is not called a terrorist act.....it would offend Obamas muslim brothers.

In honor of Dick Cheney and Don the Rummy we should have the tomb of the unknown PRIVATE CONTRACTOR. There are now two distinct kinds of soldiers to be remembered on Veterans Day. The old military where we were all soldiers together, and the new Rummy military where we worked along side people who made way more money than we did. Employees of huge corporations with connections to the government, many with huge no bid contracts.

It is a shame that president Obama continues to allow troops to be killed and maimed in the two illegal Cheney crusades. The WAR ON TERROR is pure 100% phony and fake. On 9/11/01 and today, there is no massive Osama Bin Laden army navy air force poised to bring down the United States. Just because Henry Kissinger was laughed out of the 9/11 investigation, does not mean those who did the investigation were any more honest than Henry. Americans need to call for a NEW investigation of 9/11/01. I believe they will find the TRUTH, which is that 9/11 was the trigger for the massive fraud called the war on terror.

Many of us will continue to talk about this, in hope we can wake up enough Americans with white plastic in their ears, to demand the government at least try and be honest about what happened and is happening. We will have to exclude congress, since 99% of them are so busy doing nothing, we should not disturb them.

I don't agree with Obama but it was George W. Bush who not only let us vets down, he let America down, by involving us in two costly wars that could have been prevented had we done appropriate intel and had his administration been appropriately alert pre-9-11. I feel really sorry for the exploited military and their families that have seen many tours of duty. This stress is going to affect them for the rest of their lives. All Cheney ever had to say about it was that they volunteered for it. That's far more than he ever did.

It went way farther back then Bush.

It's the politicians who start the wars, not us vets. We only try to protect our country and its citizens, not the aspirations of the rich who never did any service for their country except buy others to fight for them. Democracy by slaughter is not what democracy is all about, its what the greedy interests of Capitalism is about.
by presjfk November 11, 2009 2:38 PM EST
I don't believe there has been a war where the vets weren't let down by the government. Proof positive that the old saying, don't volunteer for anything is good advice. I had a WWII vet ask me a question a couple months ago, "Do you know what the vets of all wars, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and all the recent wars have in common." He answered, "they all got screwed." He's right. Think twice before you volunteer to fight a war not worth fighting and possibly being killed or even worse. What is worse? Use your imagination.

Our troops are the best and deserve better than to be led by the idiot politicians of the last 30+ years. Obama included and I voted for him.

How about we start pointing the finger at the real culprit? "WE THE PEOPLE". The President by himself can't do much. It takes congress too. Our Senators and Representatives wring their hands and hold meaningless hearings when the gross mistreatment of veterans stricks a chord with the public, but yet they continue to underfund those agencies that are charged with providing services to our veterans. Has anyone ever seen our congress underfund their own PAY, or INSURANCE, or RETIREMENT, or any other of THEIR benefits?

Since ours is a government of the people, These congressmen are our representatives. WE THE PEOPLE elected them, and as long as WE THE PEOPLE keep electing them and don't vote them out of office, then they must be doing what WE THE PEOPLE want. As long as we do nothing, then "WE THE PEOPLE" are responsible for the mistreatment of our veterans.

I fully agree with old-enough. I'm a Vietnam vet, and have seen the injustices heaped upon not only veterans, but all of the American people. I've seen too many incumbents reelected after they were caught with their fingers in the pie. We need to vote out the incumbents and continue to do so, until somebody in congress gets the message.

You paid liberal trolls are hilarious.

We the people don't want the PC ******** any more than your V leader and the government has jammed down our throats all of our lives.

We are fed up. Those soliers were killed because a jihadist recieved an affirmative action position in a college he was never qualified to be at to begin with. His previous education was listed as a med school in Syria.

He had been preaching violence for years and the army knew about it. He had been in contact with Al Qaeda and the govenment knew about it.
He had been complained about by patients and fellow doctors alike.

These families deserve justice and answers, not to be fed a bunch of PC lies from incompetent charlatans.

And this has not been "By the people, for the people" for decades in this country. Just look at the two clowns we could vote for in the last election.

Ho-Hum, we have for generations let down our veterans, he won't be any different. Empty suit speaks no truth. This is from a vet 1968 to 1976. I served and have never received anything but a few thank you's and that has only been recently and from people that know me. Obama, "YOU LIE". from an American born and raise, no transplant here. By the way, most men in my family served from WW1 on down to Irag and afgan.

Mr. Obama is a speech-maker, NOT an orator.
And a promisor, NOT a doer!
America CANNOT let her service members down.
But, he already HAS!

Stop making speeches that have no meaning,
and stop making promises you have NO intention of keeping!
Nearly one year of empty promises,
Don't bore us with three years more of useless words!

Are you kidding? How in God's name can you blame someone that walked into the worst mess in the history of the Presidency???? This guy is just trying to clean up the absolute disaster left by George W. Bush......he would need 10 years to 1) fix the economy 2) stop a war that cost us 1000's of American lives for NOTHING 3) calm the rest of the world down so we don't get the @#!?*&^% be-jeepers blown out of us......NO ONE could do a better job for our vets or the American people.....he's a man, a President, NOT a magician!!! What are YOU doing for our vets?????
by stn_sage November 11, 2009 8:24 PM EST
To allgoodthgs:

First, calm down! Second, I'm not 'blaming' anyone...I'm stating fact or my opinion as appropriate! Third, he's a man...he KNEW what the situation WAS...he agreed to take it on! At some point, he and his supporters are going to have to STOP BLAMING BUSH and get on with governing! Fourth, he CAN stop the war ANY TIME! He's Cdr-in-Chief, all he has to do is ISSUE THE ORDER! Fifth, no nation is currently bombing us or seriously threatening to do so...he doesn't need to spend so much time traveling overseas...he's miss-using his time! And, YOU are exaggerating! Sixth,I don't believe he's done a good enough job for vets or the American people. Seventh, we agree...he's NOT a magician.
But, he could be doing a better job as president by keeping at least SOME of his campaign promises. Eighth, the economy is harder to deal with...but quadrupling the national debt in a money 'giveaway' to Wall Street and the private banking system IS NOT going to get the economy on it's feet! Neither is...hiring those responsible for the problems...and tasking them to fix same! Ninth, I am a vet! I haven't been hired by the Obama administration to fix certain aspects of the VA, when I am, then I'll do it! Until then, I'm 'out of the loop'!
Tenth, if you're going to defend someone...it helps to have the facts 'on your side'...in your case...you don't! Better luck next time!

Obama has already let them down with his utter aversity to stating the truth. President, the words are easy, Islam, Muslim, Jihad, terror. Try to say them. The American people can distinguish between a peaceful Muslim and a Jihadist. We are not a stupid as you think. It was political correctness that got these troops killed, an error that you perpetuate. Speak the Truth!

Obama's big mistake, not ending the wars now! Get the f out of there. I voted for change and not more of the same. What a disappointment this President has become.

I left the service and was let down. I couldn't get a job anywhere. I could not get health care. Nothing changes for us veterans.

by USMC-Mom November 11, 2009 1:46 PM EST
Yes the Veterans need to be treated better!! 100% agree.
And I HATE the way Veterans are treated.

Blinderoff, The troops don't have it so great either. They are promised so much...then let down. All Military (retired & in service)deserve so much more than they are given.
