Madoff's Rolex, Boats and More to be Auctioned

(CBS)
Attention Mets fans: Feeling down after watching a Yankees-Phillies World Series? Need a little boost to get through a long offseason? How does owning Bernard Madoff's tattered but shiny plush Mets jacket sound? With "Madoff" sewn on the back, it's sure to be a hit from Wall Street to Citi Field.

The jacket is one of more than 100 seized items once belonging to the famous Ponzi schemer and his wife Ruth Madoff set to be auctioned to the public Saturday in New York. Other items include Madoff's Rolex watch, Mrs. Madoff's jewelry and furs, and a decoy duck.

The property was forfeited in connection with Madoff's prosecution and the auction is run by the U.S. Marshals Service, which seized it in a series of raids. According to a press release, the proceeds "will be distributed to the United States Department of Justice forfeiture fund to compensate the victims of this multi-billion dollar fraud."

And if a Rolex simply isn't a big enough Madoff acquisition, head down to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., where on Tuesday the Marshals Service will be auctioning off three luxury yachts seized from Madoff, plus a 61-foot fishing yacht formerly owned by top Madoff aide Frank DiPascali (plus Madoff's low-mileage Mercedes Benz CLK 320 convertible).

The DiPascali boat is described as follows: "61-foot 2003 Viking Convertible high-performance powerboat with tournament-grade fittings, top-grade craftsmanship and amenities designed for the elite sportfisherman."

The most interesting item in my opinion is not one of the most expensive. Its a personalized New York Mets jacket inscribed with ?Madoff? across the back in big scripted sewn letters. I wouldn?t recommend wearing the jacket out in public as you very well could be shot, but the jacket would make a very interesting collectible to adore your home. The jacket also carries a sense of irony as New York Mets owners Fred Wilson and Saul Katz were both friends of Madoff as well as victims of his ponzi scheme.

Of course it remains to be seen just how much money these items and the auction as a whole will take in. It is though more than safe to assume that when compared to the amount lost by investors in Madoff?s scheme, it will merely be a drop in the ocean. However, it is nice to see the government doing what it can to try and get these people a little bit of their money back. Either way I think it will be a nice feeling to people who lost money to get a check, no matter how small in comparison, and know that it came from the sale of some of Madoff?s items. It might provide little comfort, but still a small sense of revenge.
