House Democrat: Illegal Immigrants Should Get H1N1 Vaccine

Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (D- New Jersey) said on "Washington Unplugged" Friday that illegal immigrants should be eligible to receive the scarce H1N1 vaccines if they fall into the high risk groups,.

"We should do the vaccination strictly based on whether its a high risk group because, you know, disease has no barrier based on whether you are documented or not," Pallone told moderator John Dickerson. "If you end up not inoculating people who are undocumented and they start spreading the disease then that hurts everyone."

Dickerson asked the congressman how he would respond to the argument that the already unproduced and scarce vaccine should be distributed to United States taxpayers first.

"That's acting against your own self interest," Pallone said. "That's like saying all of the poor people have a disease so we won't inoculate them, and somehow the rich people are going to immune. You've got to be practical about this and not worry about whether somebody has papers.'

Dr. Anthony Fauci, former head of the National Institutes of Health under President Bush and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, agreed.

"When you vaccinate people who are in this country you go another step towards preventing the spread," Fauci said. "As a physician as a public health person it doesn't matter to me who those people are. You are trying to keep the level of infection in the community down."

He argued that the issue of who to vaccinate should not be based on whether or not someone is legally in the country. "You look at all of society and you want an individual benefit and a community benefit," he said.

Pallone, who chairs the House Energy and Health Subcommittee, expressed concern about a Business Week report that employees of some of Wall Street's largest banks had received doses of the vaccine for high-risk employees.

Pallone said the federal process which allowed New York City the decision-making power to distribute the vaccine "may have to change."

"I don't think it should just be based on who applies," he said.

Dickerson asked what the congressman makes of the conservative argument that the delay in the distribution of the H1N1 vaccine serves as proof that the so-called "public option" in health care reform would be disastrous.

"Well that's absurd," Pallone replied. "Basically what health care reform does is set up an exchange that includes mostly private insurance companies and the public option is just one option. If the public option doesn't do a good job people won't choose it."

I can't believe it..The swine flu is already here..I have been holding off getting a shot because I am not in the high risk group..I really want to know how I can denounce my citizenship..They have more benefits than the citizens...Free healthcare, they don't get arrested for crimes because no on wants to mess with the legal tape of what to do with them/deportaion..yes Google...operation *******...Eisenhower sent over a million illegals home in 1954..because soldiers were returning from the war and there wasn't any jobs...I don't care if the illegals are brown, white, yellow, black or purple...This country can't afford anymore free loaders..They are talking about amnesty...no way...do you think we will have people doing low wage jobs than or create millions of people on the welfare roles Wake up America...we are turning into a third world country...I encourage leagal immigration not illegal immigration..The politicians just want amnesty because they know the hispanics are the fastest growing minority and want the votes from them and the greedy business men that exploit these people....

If they show up for the vaccination, ship them back to their country. That way, they can pass their germs around over there...There is no need to accomodate them here. This Congressman's priorities are screwed--but since they are, screen those same immigrants for TB, parasites, leprosy, antibiotic resistant STDs, fungal infections and antibiotic resistant staph and strep. The least they can do is make certain that if they don't infect us with the swine flu--that they are not killing us off with something else they had but we never knew--since they snuck into the country.

As an independent, I vehemently disagree with the Congressman!

Illegal immigrants are INVADERS! They are not citizens! They shouldn't have legal rights, here! Oh, yes...let's reward them for illegally entering the United States!

Is this the ACTIVE, current policy of the Democrat party?! Because if it is...I know ONE vote they WON'T be getting henceforth! So, they're in FAVOR of rewarding CRIMINALITY?!!

If they didn't 'file' when they crossed the border...they should be taken back to the border, returned to whence they came, and FOREVER barred from entering the U.S.A. again...for illegally entering the first time!

But...they shouldn't be rewarded for breaking the law!

Why is deportation immpossible? They are no different then common criminals, they broke the law and should be deported to whatever country they came from. Race has nothing to do with it, if they are white, black, brown or yellow they are illegal. Let them immigrate legally and apply for citizenship as many of our ancestors did and become tax paying citizens.

Everyone should be eligible to receive the H1N1 vaccine. You cannot stop the spread of the H1N1 virus until you have vaccinated a majority of the population. If you exclude any group they will just continue to spread the virus to otherwise healthy people.

That wasn't what was said - and surely you can read. It said, all high-risk groups - regardless of illegal immigrants or otherwise should get it first. That only makes sense - anything to keep it from spreading...

Illegal immigrants should be sent home without ANY medical assistance by the United States! Stop this crap NOW!

If you were a Samaritan woman at a well, you likely wouldn't have offered THAT foreigner a sip of water...

And by not offering undocumented foreigners sips of water--odds are no diseases could have been passed along from the well. The large incidences of cholera, schitosomiasis, diptheria, typhoid, etc are often spread by contact such as communal water sources.
