Breaking Down Obama's Approval Rating Slide

The latest CBS News Poll, conducted in early October, found President Obama's approval rating hasn't changed much over the past few months, but it is down from the high he reached in April, as he neared the end of his first hundred days in office.

The president's overall job approval rating was 56 percent in early October, with 34 percent disapproving, and 10 percent saying they don't know. Approval dropped twelve points since April, when 68 percent approved.

(CBS)

Mr. Obama has lost ground with independents and Republicans. In the October CBS News Poll, just 20 percent of Republicans approved, down from 31 percent in April. Most recently 52 percent of independents approved, down 13 points from 65 percent. 91 percent Democrats approved in April; 87 percent do so now.

 OBAMA APPROVAL RATINGS BY PARTY
10/2009 4/2009
Republicans 20% 31%
Democrats 87% 91%
Independents 52% 65%

According to CBS News Polls, other recent presidents have experienced drops in their approval ratings at similar points in their presidencies.

There was a twelve point drop in Ronald Reagan's approval rating by the fall of his first year in office, and he too was grappling with a bad economy. In April 1981, 67 percent approved of the job President Reagan was doing; by September approval had fallen to 55 percent, with 33 percent disapproving. President Jimmy Carter's approval rating dropped nine points, from 64 percent in April 1977 to 55 percent by October. President Bill Clinton's stayed about the same: 49 percent approved in May 1993, as did 48 percent in October.

Of course, other presidents have gained ground in their approval ratings during their first year in office. President George W. Bush, who has received both the highest and the lowest approval rating of any modern president, saw his approval rating soar to 90 percent in October 2001, just after the terrorist attacks.

PRESIDENTIAL APPROVAL RATINGS - FIRST TERM
Spring Fall
Barack Obama 68% 56%
George W. Bush 56% 90%
Bill Clinton 49% 48%
George H.W. Bush 61% 69%
Ronald Reagan 67% 55%
Jimmy Carter 64% 55%

I think he has done better than any president since FDR. Obama inherited the worst economy since the great depression and without the aciton taken to stop the colaspe of the bankers it would have been just like the depression.
I know it is tough to borrow all the money--I would have raised taxes on the top 3 percent of the richest as soon as I could have after taking office.
How many billions and millions does any one need to invest, hide in foreign banks, which is being brought to light, and put in the bank. The Bush family are very rich and how many jobs did they create, how many tractors did W. Buy for his ranch? Did you see the shack that had boards missing when they held press conferences at the ranch? He would not even buy a board to replace the missing.

As a nurse and a biology minor, I can assure that the definition of a living thing as listed in any science textbook certainly fits an embryo as well as a an unborn fetus. It is not dead tissue or it would never develop and grow. In an abortion it is very much alive until it is willfully and purposefully exterminated. Any honest abortionist admits that truth- they just believe the woman's rights trump the life of another. This argument carried to it's extreme conclusion is if you inconvenience me I have the right to kill you. In short... Murder.

Hey folks ...It's not too late . I'm sure we could convince George W. Bush to return for a 3rd term . Would you like THAT any better than what you have now ? By the way , I just checked , and our current President enjoys a 56% job approval rating as of late October 2009 and I figure that even if the Dems lose some ground in congress next year , the Repubs will Still be in the cellar ( they are SO far down in the minority now it will take more than 1 election for them to get back on top ) . Even though there is some Democratic dissention on major issues such as health care reform , there are dozens of pieces of legistlation being passed by them every day , most of which are not widely known or discussed , which will nonetheless fly in the face of the hard right and alter the course of this country for years to come ...And Mr. Obama is putting out executive orders daily and will have the power to appoint probably at least 2 more justices to the Supreme court ... because unless the Republicans can come up with a much better candidate than Sarah Palin for 2012 , he will be in the White House for a LONG time !

Our country is headed right toward socialism. I'm afraid for what will come if this health care passes. What happen to our rights as us citizens. Obama is not showing us what he promised and seems to me he wants to take control of everything and make our decisons for us. All this talk of tax increases, government spending when does it stop.

Obama is trying to recreate the country in his image, breaking campaign promises right and left, and putting the country's financial future at risk......and people don't like it?????

What a shock!!!

He'll be in the 30s a year from now.

The President has been holding steady at these numbers for quite a while. President Obama got 53% of the popular vote in the election. The poll numbers demonstrate that The President's base is unified and holding together a strong majority. These false notions that somehow republicans are "making a comeback" are entirely false. A few phony staged tea parties did nothing to actually change the republicans numbers which are at 25%...about the same they have been since Bush left office. All the bigoted, racist, hate filled rhetoric coming out of Beck, Limbaugh, et al. is hurting the republicans. Acting like the persecuted victims of the "liberal elite" and the media hurts them also. Nothing hurts them more than their miserable performance of the previous 8-10 years. Americans will not simply forget the failed republican policies, wars, economic disaster, and governance of the previous 8 years. They must thing Americans are stupid. Now they are splintering and fighting within. All these things combined demonstrate that the republicans are accelerating their descent into irrelevance.

I will break it down for you...the economy is no better / the stock market is now back in retreat...the country is split over health care reform and Congress is becoming more and more polarized (what happened to the coming together?)...the commander in chief cannot be relied on to make crucial troop decisions in Afghanistan...H1N1 vaccine cannot be delivered fast enough and kids are dropping like flies - we have known about the threat since this spring and the country appears unprepared...oil companies are taking over Iraqi oil fields under the watch of Obama...and yet he is playing golf and having a great time parading around and attending Olympic committee deliberations. At least he won the Nobel peace prize..I guess if you cant make a decision during a war you are a winner.

No, I'll break it down for you.

So now along comes Barack Obama who sees all the massive amounts of greed and the basic unfairness of our entire system as it has been developing over the past 8 years. And Americans responded to his calls for change and elected him our next president. And now those same GREED interests that have caused all this massive damage to America's middle class are spending massive amounts of money funding campaigns of lies and distortions to try to discredit a man who sees all there is that is wrong with America right now. And so now there is a huge headwind that is facing the president due to all these "special interests" working against all his initiatives.

The economy clearly has been saved from total collapse due to the presidents policies and swift action.

The healthcare reform with a public option has clear support from the American public in the latest polling. It is the extremist Republicans in the Senate that are refusing support, despite a majority of Americans wanting this healthcare reform passed. And this level of support is even after all the millions spent by the "special greed interests" to line the pockets of the Republicans and the onslaught of lies and distortions put out by right-wingnuts on healthcare.

As far as coming together. Many, many overtures have been made by the Democrats to the extremists Republicans and the Republicans have rebuffed every single one of them. You cannot come together with these extremist Republicans. There ideology has moved so far to the right that all the centrists have left the party and now you have nothing left but narrow-minded ideologues who would never consider the common good.

As far as Afghanistan, the president is not shooting from the hip like Bush/Cheney. He's taking the proper amount of time to assess the best course of action to achieve the best result. And this time with America's interest at heart rather than plugging Halliburton into the public treasury.

And your H1N1 comment is just stupid. The president cannot make the labs produce the vaccine any faster than they already are. The labs have been going full bore since the pandemic was first identified and they said that the yields are not quite as good as they were hoping. This is nothing that the president or anyone else has any control over.

There has never been a president who has had to work as hard as President Obama in his first year and yet you complain because he will take a day to attend some deliberations that promote the United States of America. And yes, President Obama won a Nobel Prize because of his power to inspire billions of people around the world. Not only did America celebrate his election. The whole world watched the campaign and could see that this was a truly inspirational leader. A leader with a vision not just of four years, but with a long vision of a better future, a bright future for the US and also a bright future for the whole world.
by us_1776 October 28, 2009 9:44 PM EDT
THERE IS NO COMPARISON TO ANY PREVIOUS PRESIDENT.

President Obama is facing the most massive firestorm of "special interest" contrived lies and distortions than has ever been faced by any president at any time in our country's history. The amount of money being spent by private "special interests" at trying to undermine the president is huge. These "special greed interests" are well-heeled and nearly all benefit from the status-quo. A status-quo that has brought us an economic crisis, a housing crisis, a credit crisis, a mortgage foreclosure crisis, the huge healthcare insurance crisis. All of these were caused by GREED. And those that benefit from the greed-based status-quo are now trying to conduct a campaign of lies against a great man. The rest of the world has recognized the greatness of Barack Obama and it is time for every American to realize what a great man we have elected as our president. These type of people only come along maybe once every 50 years. We are indeed very lucky to have him now when our nation needs a young, strong, visionary who wants equal rights for all, fair wages and pay for all, and a stronger better educated American workforce that can compete in the global market.

Shame on those who would act to undermine such values and our president.

Give me a list of 10 things that he has done to show his "greatness"..and someone who only comes along "once every 50 years."
What a joke! He got elected. He bailed out the banks. He gave a good speech once. His wife dresses nice. He gave a good speech once. I believe that anyone who supports abortion rights does not have "such values." He supports the destruction of innocent life..there you go for your values. What happened to the equal rights for all? Where is the fairness in murder? Go to sleep on that one.

Your post is baloney.
Just like Obama.
by jeff-fla October 28, 2009 11:27 PM EDT
newyorkmom. There is so much more to base your decision on. Like a woman's rights. Be sure to get your facts right, Bush bailed out the banks with no restrictions. Obama put restrictions on them. Those who got the money, they are now lining up to give it back. As for Abortion rights. It is not a life until it is born. So there is no murder. This is a President who was given the most messed up problems to deal with. I think what he has done in just a few short months is more than most have done in years. For the 1st time I think we have a man who is going to change the world for the GOOD. If you take the time to read other than FOX news you will see most everyone agrees with me.
by Justme8811 October 29, 2009 12:29 AM EDT
He hasn't done anything, except try to bankrupt our country, make a huge government (just cost us more), try to shove health care down our throats that 85 percent don't want and will put us another trillion in debt, trying to make this a socialist country! He is headed to be one of the worst leaders in history! (notice I didn't and will never call him Presi...)

Again View and read more than just FOX news. Bush had more Czars than Obama or any other President. Bush grew the Government more than any other President. Obama has been shrinking Government. As for health care. More want it than not. Try having Diabetes and been self employed. EVERYTHING is out of pocket. If you really think the health insurance has your best interest at heart. You need to see a shrink. Why are we 37th in the world for quality of heath care. France is number one. There health care cost is 1/10 of ours. Makes me wonder who is doing what right. People please read more than one source. Do your research.

US -- this is total bunk...just a big jug of Messianic Kool-Ade.

As far as I can tell, the "rest of the world" is realizing what many of us have known all along...that Obama's only "greatness" is as a political flim-flam artist. He is a corrupt politician who lies to suit whatever the day's purpose, and he is doing our country tremendous harm.

Obama's "values," if you can call them that, are to self-promote and expand his power base so that he and his cronies can capitalize maximally. His means to that end is a brand of populist politics that seek to exploit the neediness of the masses and to silence opposing voices. Anyone who doesn't see that needs to take off the blinders.

Politics as usual, masquerading as "change we can believe in."

His approval rating hasn't slid. The media is trying to please their corporate masters. If an election were held today he would still win.

Army - nobody is "Clinging" to the Rasmussen poll -How does Rasummsen give them a sense of warmth?? Rasmussen was the closest in the last two presidential elections. You don't get viable data from a n extremely limited sampling of adults. Less than 50% of adults in such a sampling vote. That is why they are not called registered of "Likely". (Duh) The purpose of these polls is to tell us who might potentially be the winner. This isn't about warm fuzzies. Check out the polling history before you comment. And, AND this poll was conducted two weeks ago. Ancient history as far as polling is concerned. And, the aggragate as represented and reported RCP is not a "conglomorate" It is an average of all the polls. Most of the polls in thier report are over a week old also. This poll by ABC has already been reported as having 20% Republicans and 33% Dems.

Republicans are bickering. Democrats and Independents are simply defending themselves from the lunatics that have hi-jacked the republican party.
by stuart-johns2 October 28, 2009 7:43 PM EDT
One poll I am familiar with is the one that says while Obama's approval rating holds steady at approx. 53% the republican extremists favorability has dropped to a low of just 19%!

And the republican extremists continue to drop in favorablility among Americans.

Now that's an accurate poll.

What have the republicans accomplished? I follow legisilative action daily. Just about everything out of the House and Senate has zero support of the republican extremists. Even the recent Coast Guard budget recieved zero republican support.

Please. Go away. That's what America is saying to the republican extremists.

While he was at the White House, the greatest accomplishment of George Bush was to have dodged the shoes thrown at him by the Iraqi reporter. We have to wait and see if Mr. Obama is able to surpass that.

If the president is doing his job, then at any given time he will have half the country happy and the other half not so happy.

BTW 'JunkJournalism', He just signed a hate crimes bill like he promised he would...

Since most of these comments are extremely critical of the president, I would like to say that this president is doing all he can to undo the terrible damage done to this country by the Republican Party. Think back on why he won. It was the Republicans who turned our treasury over the Chinese. It was the Republicans who ignored warnings of attacks. It was the Republicans who ran up the largest deficit in the history of the world. They handed him a mess. It will take time to undo the mess they created.

It's a pretty easy answer. His policies are far to the left of the electorate, which is always more or less moderate. He is a left-wing ideologue governing as though the people were of this same mindset, which they are not. As a country, financially, we are broke, and he wants to continue making us more broke, it's very easy to see why his ratings are sliding, he's not a very good President.
