Katie Couric's Notebook: Elephants Wanted

Calling all pachyderms! The Republican Party is looking for a few good men and women.

As Politico reported, there's growing concern among some GOP leaders that controversial commentators and far-right conservatives have hijacked the message.

People like Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin appeal to the base - and you certainly need that base to win elections. But in an age when 42 percent of Americans call themselves Independents - you can't win with just the base, either.

Minority Whip Eric Cantor is calling for more voices in the Republican Party. And Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty says the party needs to be all about addition right now - as the number of declared Republicans hits a 26 year low, according to a poll in the Washington Post.

Before the 2010 midterm elections roll around, Republicans need to get the focus back onto the Big Tent where all are welcome and off the sideshows that are popping up along the party's fringe.

That's a page from my notebook.

I'm Katie Couric, CBS News.

You are truly the epitome of smug, elitist poseur. To pretend you are even slightly interested in the future and success of the Republican Party is a farce. Your deliberate and intentional mistreatment of the Palin interview last fall is an assault on journalistic integrity. Your continued toadying behavior toward this administration is tantamount to collusion. What ever happened to the press as a watchdog to those in power, not those who question those in power? Shame on you.

Oh, Katie, I forgot something.........I wish you could really give us the news.........you know, what is going on out there. Cambell Brown knows what I am talking about. Look at your ratings, guess if you had the freedom that Bill O'Reilly has your ratings would be better. You see Katie, we have ways of checking to see if "Fox" is telling us lies, so we know what they report is true. So you see this makes us just "sick" when you guys "SPIN" I guess ACORN will not be able to VOTE next time.

Katie...............we conservatives are not going to support our leaders who have strayed from the things we believe in. So we are dumping all these smart lawyers who we have sent to Congress and have gone astray............We want leaders who will stand up for the things we want....we are sick of Congress, they do not speak for us. May be we don't need lawyers in Congress. THEY know how to cheat too well, look at the Health Care bill, 2000 pages, and no one can tell you what it says. We need to send the people in our towns who we see living what they talk. We have a country where our leaders lobby and get rich. Look at Charles Rangel, he is guilty, but do they do anything to him, NO. because he is one of them. Look what the Unions have done to our factories, they sent them to other countries, and now they want card check so they can target those who do not vote UNION....My this has got to stop..............SO my vote goes to the man next door, who will speak of me.

KATIE, YOU ARE NOT cute anymore! Your ratings are so bad that they have called me up to replace your show, and I am a middled aged woman in the mountains in Ca. I will do your show for free and get better ratings than you now. Climb on one of your horse's and ride away in the wind Katie!

The media today is a co-conspirator of the cult of corruption and their socialist agenda. Katie C. and the rest of the HARD LEFT wants everyone to think the Republican Party is fractured! And if you don?t have Modern Middle of the road attitude you?re a far right wack-job - Tea bagging lunatic! And this Middle of the road is all about tolerance and compromise! This is the lefts plan to keep pounding on the people who brings out the truth. The leftist media continually tells us that, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, etc. is the radical right. And what they say does not represent the middle of the road America. Katie C and all her cohorts on the other networks are trying their best to squash and marginalize their conservative message. Well if they are just the far right fringe and they are just beating the drum to their own wack-jobs. Then explain to me why they are awfully, awfully, awfully, worried about them and what they say! Truth be knowen the hard leftist are scared to death of them and the message!!

Isn't it wonderful how Curic is so concerned about the Republican Party???

The Republican Leadership is excellant. I doubt most people know them, much less listen to them. If the Marginalized Socialist Media covered them, they would know this. Don't complain about their leadership if you pick ABC, CBS, MSNBC, NBC and CNN to watch. CBS News is not even in the running. MSNBC is rated after the Cartoon Channel.

They should be covering Boehner instead of Pelosi if they want to be more journalistic. They serve the 20% who consider themselves "liberal" and the 30% that "Strongly Approve" of Obama's job performance. They do not serve the 40% to 60% that self-identify as "Conservative."

I so agree with your comments as well......I have never liked Katie C, while on the morning talk show she was sarcastic, rude and single minded, acting as if she was the only person on the show that had much to say that counted.....she acts that way on the News as well...I never watch her! She is narrow minded and liberal...a condition that is ruining this nation! We have every right to expect the Founding Fathers principals and faith in God to stand the test of time, as that is what this nation was founded on!!! The Constitution states the rights to religion, not from it. Those that are the liberal hacks that seem to think they are in sole control of things ought to remember that, when trying to cut the vast majority of the nation out of the right to be. In God We Trust is our national motto and stands firm. Trying to take God out of everything is what is running this nation into the ground and into socialism....He will not be hushed as anyone with understanding and remembering what this nation used to be before the nonsense of political correctness got pushed in everyone's face...makes me sick. Katie, Pelosi, Clinton, Napolitano and a few others should just hop abord their brroms and fly away into the Halloween night never to engraciate themselves on decent folks who want the honor, faith and truth of a once great nation that they are taking for granted in chipping away at all America stand for, or used to before they got their 2 cents worth pushed in our faces........God Bless America again for real!!!

Hey Katie, how about a few more "BLUE" donkeys to buck the leadership in the House and Senate? When the blind lead the blind they both fall into the ditch, and it's clear to any thinking person that Reid and Polosi do not know what they are doing. What a mess!

I'm curious. Why would any liberal in the media be concerned about what happens to the Republican Party? The Republican Party was a loser with a capital "L" until Ronald Reagan showed them the way to win. CONSERVATISM! Unfortunately the Republicans in recent years have lost their way, voting, spending and acting like Democrats. RHINOs lost the presidency and both houses of Congress, and now we're suppose to follow them over the abiss? HA! Unlike the Democrats, the Republicans squandered their golden opportunity to pass legislation that would have bettered our economy and culture for generations. Instead the RHINOs lined up against President Bush's agenda in his 1st term and handed the victory over to the Democrats, lost Congress and ended any hope of truly effecting change that would better the country. History teaches us that being a John Rockefeller Republican dooms you to minority status for decades. The Democrats held Congress for 40 years before the Conservative Revolution of the 1990s changed it. Go ahead, be a Rockefeller Republican and lick the Democrats' boots forever.
How about those "BLUE DOG DEMOCRATS"! Don't give in to the pressure or you will be out of a job along with Polosi, Reid and Barney Frank (hope).

This is why we quit watching Katie Couric long ago. Her mean liberal spin and attacks make us sick. Ever wonder why your ratings are so low ... shouldn't be hard to figure out with Katie "The Liberal Fringe" Couric

So she is probably out of a job soon anyhow!!!LOL I noticed that that Crazy screaming ban-she with 3 names on HN has been cut a hour 4 the Joy Behar show which is also a joke! I always thought that Joy would have a good show, but on the fist night, I turned her off after 10 minutes.I AM NOW A CONSERVATIVE AND LEFT THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES! ALL 25 MEMBERS OF OUR FAMILY!

You certainly received your talking points. I am a registered Democrat...but soon to not be one...and I listen to Rush, Glenn, etc. They are not the Republican Party. I am an independent and intend to stay that way.

Both parties are destroying the United States...and you and your 'associates' are assisting. Shameful.

Katie- You mean back to the days when FDR got on the Television and talked us through the depression, you know when the stock market crashed? I mean you did not protest when Biden said this, so I assume you think its true. Get a new hair style before Redstone's liberal empire implodes

What have we here? The Perky One, one of the leading, radical, left wing sock puppets for Obama's government controlled media, doling out advice to the Republican Party? There are some things you can be sure of whenever the stuck pigs start squealing. First, the Democrats always attack the people they fear the most. That explains their (and Katie's) obsession with Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin. Second, the Dems will always misinterpret polls to their benefit. What the polls are actually showing is the independents (or moderates, if you must) are bailing out on Obama in droves, and that most Americans identify themselves as Conservatives, irrespective of party. Perky one! Don't try to paint Limbaugh and Palin as right wing fringe nuts......you need to worry about the radical leftists and Chicago thugs you've got hanging around the White House these days. Ooops. I forgot. All of the radical lefties are behind closed doors right now trying to secretly screw the American people again....this time on Obamacare. Ya gotta love that transparency.

What the Republican party needs is not only a few good men or women. It needs to do a better job of articulating to the many, many Americans who are suffering each and everyday through the various social issues that have taken their desire to even show an interest in politics to an even new lower level.

We need more republicans who show empathy, compassion and a concern for others.. not an arrogance, a willful disregard or self interest in serving their own needs. We want Republicans who will stand up and not only challenge the President.. but work with the President. We want Republicans who serve the needs of all Americans; not disecting and analyzing each and every circumstance and poll to best fit their specific needs. The Republicans party needs leaders.

People are dying in war, starving in urban communities, living paycheck to paycheck, losing their sense of family and country. I want Republicans to understand the issues instead of trying to adapt to them. Let's start being proactive instead of reactive and maybe, just maybe the two party system will once again work for all of us.

I agree. The Republican Party needs leaders, which we are sorely lacking in right now. Funny, if you ask a liberal Dem to contribute his money to the causes he holds dear, he wants to turn to the taxpayers instead. Here's a suggestion. Put your own money where your mouth is! There are hundreds and hundreds of private charities that take care of people that cannot help themselves. Open your checkbook and write a nice fat check to the charity of your own choice...and don't take a tax deduction for it!! Since liberal Democrats are in love with polls, how about the one that concluded that conservatives and Republicans far and away contribute more to charities than liberal Democrats.
