Obama Presses for Action on Climate Bill

(AP Photo/Gerald Herbert)
President Obama on Friday called for the passage of comprehensive climate change legislation, in order to make renewable energy profitable in America and jumpstart the development of cutting-edge clean energy technologies within the U.S.

"Nations everywhere are racing to develop new ways of producing and using energy," the president said at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "The nation that wins this competition will be the nation that leads the global economy. And I want America to be that nation."

Earlier in the day, the president toured a MIT research laboratory working on solar, battery and wind technology, among other things.

The research going on there, he said, is a "reminder that all of you are heirs to a legacy of innovation – not just here but across America – that has improved our health and wellbeing and helped us achieve unparalleled prosperity."

Innovators today face greater challenges than in the past, Mr. Obama said. For instance, he said, "the system of energy that powers our economy also undermines our security and endangers our planet."

Nevertheless, Mr. Obama said, innovators must step up and meet challenges such as transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable fuels, or moving from an economy that's importing oil to one that's exporting clean energy technology.

The president touted the funding provided by his economic stimulus package, which made the largest investment in clean energy in history and represented the largest single boost in scientific research in history. He also said his budget makes the research and experimentation tax credit permanent.

Mr. Obama pointed out the wide range of supporters for action on climate change and energy independence. For instance, he said, the Pentagon has declared our dependence on fossil fuels a security threat. Additionally, there are veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan campaigning to end U.S. dependence on oil.

"And we are now seeing prominent Republicans like Senator Lindsey Graham joining forces" with Democratic leaders on the issue, he said, adding that, "The naysayers, the folks who would pretend this is not an issue, they're being marginalized."

There are so many people just struggling to survive in this economy. One can only hope this isn't going to mean just another tax increase at a time when we need to focus on getting people back to work.

For years, there have existed private inventors who have made 'energy-free' devices that run by generating electricity from rotating magnetic fields!

Their products are cheap, effective, and environmentally CLEAN!

IF President Obama, WERE serious about this he'd see that these inventors got capitalized and their products went into mass production!

Not only would it be good for the environment, the consumer, and the U.S. economy, but he would go down in history as the president responsible for the second INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION!

IF I were president, I'd do it in a micro-second!

I believe whaqt you are describing is a generator. Don't they require an outside source of power to work?

"Nations everywhere are racing to develop new ways of producing and using energy,"

Why can't we enter the race without taxing everything?
Cap and Trade doesn't stop polluters, you just pay to pollute.

But he has yet to do anything about Americans dying of H1N1 and no vaccine on the visible horizon until November---and work on his plan for Afghanistan and providing backup for our troops there, while they have begged for help for months....

Nope....Americans are dying while he is playing around and joking about a "climate bill," traveling around the globe and the U.S. to fundraisers and diplomatic jaunts, appearing on numerous talk shows with comedians and having his picture taken every other day for public relations shots at the White House.

When are people going to realize Obama is nothing but a public relations machine, feeding us propaganda, while Americans are dying.

While I tend to agree with his being stuck in election mode, I'm no so sure he is DIRECTLY responsible to the shortage of H1N1 vaccine on a timely basis.

No more than Bush was for Bird Flu vaccine.

But, I understand it is quid-pro-quo on this site to make alike attacks.

I'm more worried about the US's debt ratio.

Obama needs to spend some time actually pretending to be President rather than run around like a candidate. Now, amongst the other disasters, he is pressing CAP and TAX?. By the end of 2010 , Obama will be finished because he has made such a mess of the budget, taxes, foreign policy, deficits, health care and energy. He is without a doubt, the worst president ever elected.

I really can't say if he is the worst. I'm not up on all of the Presidents. But it would seem he has been not up to the task, which is a shame. Not only from the perspective of what is happening, but also for the initial sense of pride I was seeing in the black community.

Let's hope he does something REALLY bi-partisan once the 2010 elections makes him realizes blunt force hasn't worked.

We need to stop the outflow of money to China and then borrowing it again. Jobs don't mean anything, unless there is a balance of trade. It won't help our economy to get everyone employed, just to have them spend all of their money on Chinese goods.

Why hasn't Obama encouraged the creation of more solar power, as he claimed he would, by using part of the $787 Billion stimulus money ?

This would create jobs.

This would eventually rid the US of the middle east oil problems and those that don't like us but take our live's blood from this country.

AND, it would keep the money here.
