Obama Says It's a "New Era" on Climate Change Policy

(AP Photo/Charles Dharapak)
President Obama devoted his debut at the United Nations with an address on climate change, calling it a "new era" and touting his administration's record since he took office in January.

"It is true that for too many years, mankind has been slow to respond to or even recognize the magnitude of the climate threat. It is true of my own country as well," Mr. Obama said at a climate change forum hosted by United Nation Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. "But this is a new day. It is a new era. And I am proud to say that the United States has done more to promote clean energy and reduce carbon pollution in the last eight months than at any other time in our history."

In an effort to combat some international criticism of U.S. efforts, Mr. Obama pointed to what he called the U.S.'s "largest ever investment in renewable energy" as well as actions taken to increase fuel economy in automobiles and the energy bill that passed the House in June, but has yet to be discussed in the Senate.

"These steps represent an historic recognition on behalf of the American people and their government. We understand the gravity of the climate threat. We are determined to act. And we will meet our responsibility to future generations," he added.

Before Mr. Obama spoke, Ban Ki-moon called on the 100 world leaders assembled "to accelerate the pace of negotations" to get a new global agreement at an upcoming summit on climate change in Copenhagen, Denmark, later this year.

Obama's U.N. Debut: A Dizzying Agenda

Mr. Obama also spoke to the importance of battling global warming around the world.

"No nation, however large or small, wealthy or poor, can escape the impact of climate change. Rising sea levels threaten every coastline. More powerful storms and floods threaten every continent. More frequent drought and crop failures breed hunger and conflict in places where hunger and conflict already thrive," he said. "The security and stability of each nation and all peoples – our prosperity, our health, our safety – are in jeopardy. And the time we have to reverse this tide is running out."

In calling for global action, Mr. Obama noted that steps to fight climate change cannot take a back seat to efforts to reverse the global recession.

"Difficulty is no excuse for complacency. Unease is no excuse for inaction," he said. "We must not allow the perfect to become the enemy of progress. Each of us must do what we can when we can to grow our economies without endangering our planet – and we must all do it together."

Mr. Obama also put particular emphasis on developing nations and the need for them to do their part to reduce emissions, while also calling for richer nations to help with financial and technical assistance.

"Those rapidly-growing developing nations that will produce nearly all the growth in global carbon emissions in the decades ahead must do their part as well," he said. "We cannot meet this challenge unless all the largest emitters of greenhouse gas pollution act together. There is no other way."

This speech is the first of many meetings and encounters Mr. Obama will have with world leaders this week in New York, which includes another major address at the United Nations tomorrow and his first major attempt at Middle East peacemaking as he meets later today with both Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Arctic at warmest levels in 2,000 years or more

September 3rd, 2009

New research shows that the Arctic reversed a long-term cooling trend and began warming rapidly in recent decades. The blue line shows estimates of Arctic temperatures over the last 2,000 years, based on proxy records from lake sediments, ice cores and tree rings. The green line shows the long-term cooling trend. The red line shows the recent warming based on actual observations. A 2000-year transient climate simulation with NCAR?s Community Climate System Model shows the same overall temperature decrease as does the proxy temperature reconstruction, which gives scientists confidence that their estimates are accurate. Arctic temperatures in the 1990s reached their warmest level of any decade in at least 2,000 years, new research indicates. The study, which incorporates geologic records and computer simulations, provides new evidence that the Arctic would be cooling if not for greenhouse gas emissions that are overpowering natural climate patterns.

2008 to be in top 10 warmest years say forecasters

LONDON (Reuters) - 2008 will be slightly cooler than recent years globally but will still be among the top 10 warmest years on record since 1850 and should not be seen as a sign global warming was on the wane, British forecasters said.

recently, very recently, a team of scientists extended ice core samples from 400 years in the past to 2000 years in the past. We now have a 2000 year record of climate change. We are in a naturally occuring global cooling period. The greenhouse effect is, however, still warming the planet as evidenced by all the scientifically derived temperature studies.

It has also been recently proven that global cooling has been going on for awhile. This natural effect has been counterbalanced by man made global warming...So, it is true that both global cooling and global warming are occuring simultaneously now. If global cooling had not been happening, global temps would now be about 2 1/2 degrees warmer that present temps. Global cooling and global warming are now happening simultaneously.

Correction...Naturally occuring global cooling is happening now...Man made global warming is also occuring now. Both a naturally occuring global cooling cycle and a man made global warming cycle are now in effect.

These delusional constipated conservitards getting their anti-science views from glen beck and the rest of the foxnewsus propagandus talking heads, simply refuse to understand FACTS, and continuously parrot the same, old, tired rhetoric without any proof!

So very true, thanks to governors like Bill Ritter of Colorado and President Obama, for touting the RENEWABLE ENERGY ECONOMY for America to move forward with a VISION of the FUTURE!

He's a talker not a doer. His plans sacrifice American welfare for no purpose since the majority of the world still are increasing the amount of pollution. Plus there are reasons to believe that global warning is a naturally occuring event and I have read that no matter what we do the deed is done until the end of this century

I'm not sure that anyone should be believing anything you say. Like Hungry said, I think you are a liar.

Did you read my reply to your post the other day, on that other site?

You said that Canadians were without doctors and so therefore without health care. THAT IS A LIE. The vast majority of Canadians have a doctor and if they don't, it's because they CHOOSE not to. My brother came back from Ontario and went online and found a list of doctors that have open practices. Also my daughter moved and wanted a new doctor, so she went to this company that gave her a list of names.

And if someone shouldn't have a doctor, then all they need to do is go to a clinic. No appointment necessary.

Oh, and about that friend of yours that was complaining. There are people that will b*tch about anything and everything. They are just not happy unless they are.

by DaVicar6:
"Maybe per human capita, but termites and cows and sheep and people who eat cabbage emit more methane per capita, and methane is BY FAR a greater offender"
------------------------------------

Good point, showing how much worse methane emissions are compared to the U.S.'s per capita emissions of carbon dioxide being the highest in the world.

So, since Americans eat far more beef and lamb than the rest of the world, requiring more destruction of forests in order to raise more meat for the carnivores, America adds to our 25% of the world's CO2 emissions with the highest amount of METHANE emissions as well.

So, all in all, America adds much more than just 25% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions with our huge amount of METHANE emissions, accelerating global warming even more!

Recent comments from UN head of global temperatures will moderate and then go up. Seems odd if the same cause still is in effect. Seems he might be making it up as it goes along since global temperatures have lowered over the last ten years.

Absolutely the same old parroted BIG LIE from morons like glen beck, since reputable sources like NOAA and NASA have proven our planet is warming at accelerated rates, thus the reason why the Arctic ice/snow and worldwide glaciers are melting so fast!

Please stop the usual foxnewus propagandus!
