Obama Tells Letterman: I Was Black Before the Election

Addressing suggestions that recent criticism of his health care reform efforts has been grounded in racism, President Obama this afternoon quipped, "I think it's important to realize that I was actually black before the election."

The comment, which the president made in an afternoon taping of CBS' "The Late Show," prompted laughter from the audience and this response from host David Letterman: "How long have you been a black man?"

(Watch more clips from Letterman's interview with President Obama at the bottom of this post)

Mr. Obama said the notion that racism is playing a role in the criticism, which has been voiced by former President Jimmy Carter and others, is countered in part by the fact that he was elected in the first place – which, he said, "tells you a lot about where the country's at."

"One of the things that you sign up for in politics is that folks yell at you," the president said, noting that "whenever a president tries to bring about significant changes, particularly during times of economic unease, there is a certain segment of the population that gets very riled up." He pointed to the experiences of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan as examples.

Five Health Care Promises Obama Won't Keep
CBSNews.com Special Report: Health Care

The Letterman interview, which comes on the heels of his appearance on five different networks on Sunday, marks the latest public relations effort from a president trying to win public support for his health care efforts. Perhaps in honor of the forum, Mr. Obama opened with a joking reference to Letterman's mention that an audience member had brought a heart-shaped potato to the taping.

The main reason he had come on the show, Mr. Obama quipped, was "to see that heart-shaped potato." After Letterman retrieved the potato, the smiling president deadpanned, "That's remarkable. This is remarkable." He then, with the audience member's consent, kept the potato.

The appearance was not all jokes; Mr. Obama said that the economy was improving but that employment was lagging behind.

"Unemployment is still going to be a big problem for at least another year," he said, though he insisted the economy would emerge "stronger than before."

On Afghanistan, the president said that he will not make a decision whether to send more troops until he decides on a strategy following a comprehensive review. The top commander in Iraq has warned that more troops are needed for the U.S. to have a chance to emerge victorious.

Asked by Letterman about the wisdom of the war in Iraq, Mr. Obama said, "because Saddam Hussein is not there, that's a good thing. He was somebody who certainly had aspirations to cause a lot of trouble."

Mr. Obama added, however, that "that given the enormous stakes we had in Afghanistan, we should have finished the job there."

The president, who appeared to a standing ovation, told Letterman that his kids had been doing well, and that "they basically just goofed off all summer, which I couldn't do." He said their lives had been relatively normal and that "people don't really give them too much of a fuss" when they go out.

Mr. Obama has appeared on the "Late Show" five times before, though never as president. The interview will air in full Monday evening.

Please indulge me... How does one choose to be black? That is hilarious. I'd think if it were a matter of choice, the millions of people of darker hues enslaved would have chosen to be non-black. Please don't insult my intelligence with an attempt to circumvent the issue by pointing to the obvious that he is bi-racial and can therefore choose. That is also insane. Have you not read the state laws of LA? Google Octoroon, Quadroon, Mulatto.

Both of you have good points, but I wonder what would happen if there was a NAAWP or WET,ect

first it is etc. for et cetera.
second, I so tire of that argument from caucasians/WASPs.
Very few would care if there was a NAAWP or WET. Truth be told, there was a NAAWP for hundreds of years until the formal dismantlement of Jim Crow. Further, until the late Michael Jackson broke the barrier, MTV was in fact, in broadcast, and in effect WET.

Good Evening, and Good night.

wouldn't it have been much easier to simply say you don't like him?

Our President is gracious. President Obama does not want racial tension.

President Carter said what President Obama will not.

"A week ago I chatted with an older Canadian guy and his wife about Canadian healthcare. During our conversation the wife sung the praises of their 'free' healthcare system. While she did this her husband was sitting across from me, almost crying from the pain his knee. He only had three more weeks to go before he could have his knee operated on. When I asked them about that she said that it had only been seven weeks since his consultation and that they originally had considered going to the US for the surgery or paying to have it done privately in Canada but decided to wait it out to get the 'free' operation. They were probably lying."

Interesting story, but you fail to mention if the couple was black or white or any combination of the two.........

I was shocked to learn that Obama was black before the election. If he had told the country that before the election maybe he wouldn't have been elected and we wouldn't be bankrupt. I am hoping that with this world-shaking announcement that others will follow. Like Obama has had some really meaningful practical managerial experience in life like a job as Assistant Manager of the Shoe Department in a Wal-Mart somewhere. We have never had such an honest president.

So let me see if I get this. He is a "black man" because is skin is dark or black? But is he half a "black man" because he is half white? I'm so confused.

Just saying... Since Barack Obama was inaugurated President just over eight months ago, some 17,500 Canadians have come to the U.S. to receive health care. Just since the President?s health care legislation was introduced in the House of Representatives in March, about 12,500 Canadians have come here for health care. During that same period, how many Americans have travelled north to obtain health care in Canada because they couldn?t get it here in the States?

You bring up a very good point. Elective surgeries or procedures have a long lead time. Also the United States isd well known for providing advanced medical treatments and people come from all over the world to be treated here. Inversely thousands of Americans travel overseas for medical treatments each month because in several countries the care is just as good at a fraction of the cost. Interesting thoise numbers keep being thrown around where did those numbers come from exactly? Can anyone find the exact quote? And what makes you think its because they couldnt get health care in Canada??? (I'm not trying to mbe cute I am just asking for the source of this information thats going around to determine if its factual or not)The reason I'm asking is because Canada same as the United States has medical privacy laws so real information is difficult to come by.

Thomas Jefferson once said: "Democracy is founded on a well educated population" By some of the comments here, over 225 years later his words still ring true.

It simply amazes me the amount of misinformation and hatred I have been reading here. Lets just look at the facts, these are not my personal opinion but just constitutional and historical facts available to everyone.
1. Fiction: President Obama is a Liberal or Socialist or Communist. Fact: Barack Obama is not really a very liberal polition. he certainly is progressive maybe left of center and is more accurately defined as a pragamatist. Why do you think the liberals have issues with several of his policies.
Fiction: Barack Obanma is a Socialist or Communist - If anyone had read either or both of Barack Obamas books Dreams of my Father and The Audacity of Hope you would have read in his own words his political philosophy. These labels are just a smear to sway the uninformed and gullible. Also what is extremely obvious is this is the first US President is modern times to essentially attempt to carry out his campaign promises as he layed out during the election. Is he carrying them all out proboblty not because circumstances change, but its been pretty impressive so far. What a refreshing change a President doing exactly what he said he was going to do. Lets ask ourselves what if he actually was a Socialist or Communist whould it matter? the answer is a resounding NO! The US Constitution is extremely clear on the powers of the executative, legeslative and judicial branches of government. Even if a President was one of these the Presidents powers are extremely limited and he cannot make law only the legleslative branch can do that, and if any law passed is unconstitutional it may very well be thrown out by the US Supreme Court.

2. Is Healthcare Reform a Socialist or Government takeover? Fiction: We already enjoy several public options and socialist type programs: Social Security, Medicare, Public Education, State or Federally controlled roads, fire departments, air travel, and hundreds of other programs. I dont hear the right wingers complaining about these or trying to eliminate them. Lets be real. Universal healthcare has been proposed by Democrat and Republican Presidents since 1912, and I know this is hard for republicans to swollow, but it was first proposed by a Republican President. But, don't take my word for it look it up for yourselves.

3. The United States is a conservative nation. Fiction: The whole idea and principles of the American Revolution was an extremely radical idea. and we are all sons and daughters of revolutionaries. Read American History and stop feeding into the nonsense propaganda.

4. The Conservatives are the Majority. Fiction: Conservatives make up ~22 percent of the voting population ~22% identify themselves as Liberals and the remander (the real majority) identify themselves as moderates.

President Obama is trying to do too much at once. Fact; But, have you been watching the news he has more issues to deal with then any other president in modern times. What do you want him to do ignore issues and hope they will go away. Lets be real at least hes trying. Just like when I nightly hear someconservative Republican or another say there are several things we can do to fix healthcare (but not what President Obama wants) If there are so many things we can do to fix healthcare why didnt the Republicans do them when they controlled both houses of Congress and the Presidency for several years? Hmmmmmm.

5. President Obama is not an American citizen and therefore can't be President; Fiction: This issue is so stupid that it is almost not worth mentioning. All the courts have ruled that yes he is. If he wasent the conspiracy ran so deep that someone had the foresight to place a birth anouncement in the Hawaii newspaper three days after his birth. This is an amazing conspiracy considering that they somehow knew that he would grow up to be President 47 years later. Lets be real many of us Democrats believe that the election was stolen from Al Gore but we still accepted GW Bush as the legitamate President. I was more amazed that people would have voted for him the second time around. President Obama deserves his shot as 54% of the US population voted for him (yes, and including several former red states) he is the rightful ligit President of the United States, now get over it.

Barack Obama is the son of a single mom, bi-racial and was the First Black President of The Harvard Law Review. He is considered an expert and taught constitutional law (Wow! a President who is an expert on constitutional law, thats refreshing. Seem like a very good job pre-requsite to me)He was poor to middle class growing up, and was a community organizer and has become a self made millionare because of his books. If that isnt someone who can relate to just about everyone then who is?

The video is too jumpy, I wanted to watch it and even went searching other sites to watch the video. CBS copyright the video but didn't provide a very good video player for everyone to watch.

Obama is running from Acorn just like he did Rev. Wright, he throws them under the bus when they get caught. I will never believe his preacher deliver "one" sermon like the video we witnessed on Fox. People should thank Fox for the things they have exposed but not those liberals..........no, cover it up and try to smear Fox.........and it took two kids to uncover Acorn. The media is DEAD.........with the exception of a few.........and the left are trying to make people think they are crazy.....Nancy Pelosi is the crazy........

Fail. You are a looney tune with no understanding of your topic. Obama is a capitalist.===
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Capitalism-a system in which the land, factories, etc. used in making goods are owned and operated by INDIVIDUALS for profit.
capitalist- a person who owns much 'capital: especially, one whose wealth is used in business for making more money.!!!!!!
What part of this explains about Obama's action? NOT GOVERNMENT!
============================================================

You're assuming we've had a government that supports socialism. Nothing could be further from the truth. We haven't seen that for awhile. Our government is a corporate oligarchy.

As a side note, I read briefly your reply to my comments about Letterman, Obama, Cmarine and cindyrp. Didn't have a chance to reply at that time. Seems I can no longer find it, perhaps it was censured. The essense of your remark was that I should learn to read. And you were right, my reading was "cart before the horse". But my reading and listening was correct. As Letterman was first to bring up the "race" issue with a comment about Jimmy Carter's statements about race. So CMarine was incorrect, Obama did not bring up his race first - it was Letterman. What you probably "choked on" was my final comment "Even Glenn Beck chuckles when he sees his paycheck." The point being the Letterman show has never been a serious political forum for debate, on the contrary it is entertainment, satire, humor, much like most of what Beck says.........
