Wilson Outburst a Boon to Challenger

(AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais)
Update, 12:00 p.m. ET: Wilson emerged from his office this morning and stressed to reporters that his "you lie!" comment at last night's speech was not premeditated, reports CBS News' Josh Gross.

He said that he was contacted by the GOP leadership immediately after the speech and was told to apologize. He called the White House and discussed moving forward. Both sides agreed that immigration coverage should be discussed, Wilson said.

Since Republican Congressman Joe Wilson shouted out that President Obama had offered a "lie" during his speech to Congress last night, his Democratic challenger has raised more than $200,000, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee tells CBS News.

The DCCC says Wilson's challenger in South Carolina's 2nd congressional district, former Marine Rob Miller, received nearly 5,000 individual contributions since Wilson's outburst.

Jill Lawrence at Politics Daily reports that a significant chunk of the money has come from readers of Daily Kos, a national liberal blog, who began a group called "Defeating the man who yelled 'liar' at Obama" on the ActBlue.com Web site.

"It's worth noting that Wilson represents a heavily GOP district," CBS News Political Director Steve Chaggaris points out. "John McCain received 54 percent of the vote last year, George Bush 60 percent in 2004."

"My guess is that his constituents may be a lot more forgiving of his outburst - and may actually agree with him," Chaggaris said.

Indeed, though we have no numbers on the effect this is having on Wilson's fundraising, it wouldn't be a surprise if he got a fundraising boost as well.

Next year's battle between Miller and Wilson is a rematch of the 2008 race, when Miller got 46 percent of the vote to Wilson's 54 percent.

In 2001, when Floyd Spence died in office, Wilson won a special election with 73 percent of the vote.

Wilson’s district, which includes Columbia and resort areas like Hilton Head Island, is 26 percent African-American. It's possible that President Obama's presence on the ballot last year contributed to the relatively close 2008 results.

"I suspect that mid-term turnout, without Obama on the ballot, will be more reflective of the ’06 turnout numbers," said Chaggaris. In 2006, Wilson took 63 percent of the vote to his challenger’s 37 percent.

After President Obama said last night that his proposed healthcare reforms would not extend to illegal aliens – which is essentially trueWilson shouted out "you lie!," prompting shocked responses from other lawmakers. Wilson later apologized amid condemnation from some colleagues.

"This evening I let my emotions get the best of me," he said in a statement. "While I disagree with the president's statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the president for this lack of civility."

Update, 1:21: Following a Cabinet meeting Thursday, Mr. Obama said he accepted Wilson's apology. He said it's important to have a conversation without vitriol and said the media could help by not focusing on shrill comments. The president said he's "a big believer that we all make mistakes."

Congratulations CBS, as usual your reporting is slanted and incomplete.
You stated that Wilson?s opponent raised $200,000 (it was about $100,000 according to Miller) as a result of Wilson?s remark.
You failed to mention that overnight Wilson raised about $400,000.
Do your home work and stop with the lying. Get it?

Joe Wilson violated decorum by calling BHO a liar.
Which begs the question; did BHO violate decorum by lying?
And, then what is the proper response when someone lies in front of congress and to the whole country?

I doubt that Wilson is as concerned about the $200,000 raised as he is about the 200,000 votes he lost.

Any fool can shout, "You lie" but when asked to prove it, all those neo-cons pretend the question was never asked and just shout more scare tactics, like "Socialist".

The sad part is, there are real issues to address with Obama and they could improve their own credibility and help all Americans by doing so. Instead they are letting mindless partisan politics destroy America

If we provide free health care to illegal aliens whats to stop people from popping over just for health care? How come Canada doesn't offer U.S.
citizens that royal treatment? Who is going to pay for these illegal aliens health care? US! Sometimes it is OK to be rude. U.S. citizens seem to only listen when something outrageous happens. I am sorry Obama was embarrassed, ashamed amd frustrated by how not all of us are blinded by his good looks and charm. Some of us really don't care about his personal life. I do care though when Obama gives out more to other countries at our expense. I do care when we spend more money on our military and less on our struggling U.S. citizens. Yes, Latinos must be smart to have convinced the president to give them everything for free. U.S. are we that stupid? Are we that gullible? We are being plundered right before our eyes. We are the slaves of the world. Hey U.S. come fight and die for us. U.S. we just had a natural disaster fix it for us. U.S. people are starving in our country feed us. U.S. we have no afordable health care system give us care for free and while your at it put us on welfare. The U.S. government is not representing the U.S. citizens unless you consider "looking fine" most important. Yes we are going to look fine to other countries if we keep giving for free.

This is what neocons do not understand. That every time a right wing nutbag goes after Obama's citizenship or screeches about a harmless school speach or calls Obama a communist or some other ridiculous accusation, all those moderates and swing voters (who decide elections) are driven into the Dem camp no matter how good or bad they do. No one wants to be associated with screeching, conspiracy driven nutbags.

"No one wants to be associated with screeching, conspiracy driven nutbags."

lolll...uh oh...I better clear my social calender, then, 'cuz I'm pretty sure the right has a huge and on-going conspiracy to transform America into a third-world banana republic of "haves" and "have-nots", with the right - the Republicans - being the "haves".

What do you expect from a man from the state which started the civil war? I think the republican party stinks. All they can do is support the wealthy. They sat in that joint session last night and looked like a bunch of angry old men. No wonder nothing ever gets done. If it weren't so sad for our country their demeanor would have been laughable.

Ignorant neocon thug who can't control his hate. The only people worse than him are those defending him - after he offered sincere apologies to President Obama because he realized that he was wrong in what he did.

If he's a liar, I wonder where, in the history of presidents, he would rank on a scale of liars.

(Hint, number one was about 35 years ago.)

Congressman Wilson should be censured!!

The far right are just upset that the Congressman didn't say "you effin lie" and follow the precedent set by our esteemed for VP Dick Cheney for non-decorum when he dropped the F-bomb on the Senate floor to Senator Leahy of Vermont.

Speaker Pelosi.....Congressman Wilson should be censured!! Do it!!
==============================================

You don't get censured for being a gass bag.
