Will The Gay Community Stand Behind Obama?

(CBS)
The gay community may turn its back on President Obama and the Democratic party if the president does not begin to follow through on some of his campaign promises to extend gay rights, some gay activists say.

"The community is at the point now where they feel like the Democratic party has turned their back on them, as if gays are some kind of political pariah," John Aravosis, a gay activist and blogger, said today on on CBSNews.com's daily politics Web show Washington Unplugged.

Mr. Obama on Wednesday signed a presidential memorandum granting some federal employee benefits to same-sex partners of federal workers. Aravosis said it was a "nice step," but did not resolve any of the issues the gay community cares about. Some are becoming increasingly worried, he said, about whether the president will actually address those issues, by urging Congress to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) or allowing gays to openly serve in the military.

Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.), one of three openly gay members of Congress, said on Washington Unplugged that those particular issues are "becoming even more critical as more and more states allow same-sex couples to marry."

He also said the president has not yet done enough for the gay community.

"I think the president can and should do more and use some political capital to show some moral leadership," Polis said.

Upon signing the memorandum, Mr. Obama said, "I believe (DOMA)'s discriminatory, I think it interferes with states' rights, and we will work with Congress to overturn it."

Still, "What he did last night is reiterated his campaign position, but he no longer is promising to act to do it," Aravosis said.

Aravosis has called for a boycott of a fundraiser tonight for the Democratic Congressional and Senatorial Committees. He said gay rights may have to "punish" the Democratic party in order to move forward its agenda.

"Our people tend to have a lot of money, (and) we vote 70 percent Democrat," Aravosis said, explaining the political weight behind the gay community.

"Will The Gay Community Stand Behind Obama?"

I'm sure he's hoping they do; but not too close.

This is a bunch of uproar over nothing. Obama will keep every one of his campaign promises. The gay people just need to wait their turn. I think he will get to this right after he puts in place all of the benefits ACORN offered new voters during the campaign. A lot of them appear to be getting upset too.

Someone I know was looking into some things regarding our POTUS. He discovered Obama resigned his bar membership in 2008 apparently because he misrepresented his prior identies.

GO TO: http://www.iardc.org/ldetail.asp?id=654751301

Also Michelle Obama is no longer a lawyer. She resigmed in 1993 in the midst of an iethical investigation.

GO TO: http://www.iardc.org/ldetail.asp?id=739489913

Two Harvard Law grads who are not now lawyers and who both resigned under clouds of ethical improperties.

Question: Why was this information not adequately vetted by the press in 2007-2008? Surely the issue of integrity needs to be raised.
To resign in the face of a bar investigation in Chicago, the last vestige of corrupt Democratic inner-city political machines, has to give one pause.

Gays seem to be more obsessed about what Ms. California thinks about gay marriage. Funny thing is the people in L.A. found the truth about what white gays think about blacks and Hispanics. Racial slurs are funny with a lisp.

What a bunch of pathetic spoiled whiney children! They can't have everything their way all at once so they will abandon their party. Apparently this was never about the values of the Democratic party, this was all about playing the party they thought would give them what he want. Wake up you self involved little people. I personally couldn't care less who you sleep with and who you marry. I even support your endeavors for equal rights. But let's try to remember that there are multiple crisis occuring right now and the country does not revolve around your particular brand of bliss. There are issues that affect the entire population right now and you certainly aren't doing anything for your cause by stomping your selfish feet in the midst of all this mayhem and demanding your way or you'll bail. My response to you is "Fine, then bail. See how far you get under Republican rule" Oh wait, maybe you will just start your own party. The Party of Gays and Lesbians. That way it can be officially - All About You.

First off, it is one's behavior that makes them a Christian, not the fact that they declare themselves as such (although I know you would dearly love to believe otherwise). Of course, no Christian would advocate such a thing.

Secondly, you could always consider these acts to be "late post-natal abortions" of the doctor, since you've always loved euphemisms, gravy.

I read an interesting statistic the other day that puts things in perspective. 45 million black kids have been aborted since Roe v Wade. That is roughly equal to the entire black population of the US. That's sobering.

My typo that's not 45 million black kids that all kids, but equal to the entire black population. Abortion has it's place, but 45 million? Get serious.

When people place their opinion on a public forum expect to be judged and crticsized, it's the way it works. Also if someone claims that homosexuality is not a sin a christian will definitely let you know that you are mistaken.

Gay people have nothing else. Why would they turn their backs on the ONLY party, or President that WILL work for them? Just because they haven't gotten EVERYTHING the President said they would.

You're best bet is to compliment the President on what he has done, and see the BIG picture. You're agenda is not the ONLY thing on the President's plate right about now. It would be wise for you to STHU, and live to fight another day.

Beause, who the HECK else are you hoping will support you, if not the current administration.

Now pick out somfin purdy and go out there and,"stimulate", the economy, Mary and Butch!

This president has given us unprecidented debt to be paid for by younger people who will also have to pick up the slack when all the baby boomers retire and start collecting Social Security (if there's any cash left). The only thing positive he gave anyone is a hopey changey, feel good campaign and he still acts like he's on the campaign trail.

Violence against a minority group

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violence_against_LGBT_people

Gays are being beaten, shot at, sent to the hospital, killed. In the Middle East, they are killing gays among other groups out of hatred. Is this what we want America to become? Do we want America to revert back to the 1960's when groups were killed and segregated against for simply no good reason? Do we want to follow the ways of the Middle East and Al Queda? Let's push forward, it's time to end bigotry, discrimination, hate, and ignorance. This is modern America, not the Dark Ages.

Homosexuality is not a sin according to the Bible. Any educated Christian would know that. Scholars who have studied the Bible in context of the times and in relation to other passages have shown those passages (Leviticus, Corinthians, Romans, etc) have nothing to do with homosexuality. These passages often cherry-picked while ignoring the rest of the Bible. The sins theses passages are referring to are idolatry, prostitution, and rape, not homosexuality.

Please re-read the bible. In Deuteronomy, it clearly states that homosexuality is an abomination. I wish I had more time to get into that with you, but I am off work now. Please study that again.
by nolies74621 June 19, 2009 9:34 AM EDT
WOW! What Bible have you been reading? The New Revised Homosexual-Lesbian Version? Read Corinthians 6:9 and 6:10, Exodus 20:14, Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13. Denial is'nt a river in Egypt. If someone claims to be a homosexual/lesbian, then how can they claim to be a christian? I guess that would make them a hypocritical homosexual/lesbian.

I visited the links that you posted and they are merely intrepretations of people attempting to justify homosexuality as not sinful. They are rather weak justifications and interpretations apparently made by homosexuals or lesbians. Deperation is so unbecoming.

It makes absolutely no difference what the Bible does or does not say about homosexuality; this is not a religious issue. This is a secular nation not a theocracy. I know many on the right don't understand or accept this, but that doesn't change reality. If the far-right Christians think they are the true children of God, so be it. I could care less what they think or say. The problem emerges when these same Christians actively impress on the nation that their religious opinions supersede the real world rights of an entire monority. I'm not gay myself, but it infuriates me when I hear the radical right talk about gays as if they're aren't even US tax paying citizens. In fact, some of the dehumanizing language they use against gays is unabashed hate speech even if those using it are sincere and about their beliefs. This notion of hateing the sin not the sinner is bunk! Tell the gays and lesibians in California that the prop 8 was directed at their "sin" not at them. Bigotry is bigotry even when you use religion as a means to validate your hate.

For those of you claiming homosexuality is a "lifestyle", that is a false and ignorant statement. Homosexuality is not a choice. Just like you don't choose the color of your skin, you cannot choose whom you are sexually attracted to. Virtually all major psychological and medical experts agree that sexual orientation is NOT a choice. Most gay people will tell you its not a choice. Common sense will tell you its not a choice. While science is relatively new to studying homosexuality, studies tend to indicate that its biological.

Six months prior to the next election, Mr. Obama and the Democrats will throw the gay community some little 'bobble or beads' and promise them additional gifts AFTER the election, IF they get elected...

The question is: will the gay community fall for 'The Sting' two times in a row from Mr. Obama and the Democrats?!

The point is: you don't get the support of a group of people, if you're
NOT supporting THEM! So, Mr. Obama can hardly be surprised when he loses this voting block!

The gay community will stand behind Obama once he starts standing behind us.

We have a Democratic President and large Democratic majorities in both houses of Congress. The Democrats can no longer claim to support gay rights if they don't take action. Gay marriage is a hot potato right now, but there are some gay rights issues that have broad popular support, such as employment non-discrimination legislation and repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. There's no excuse not to act on these issues.

Until the Democrats start taking meaningful action on gay rights issues, gay voters should keep their checkbooks closed and stay home from the polls (or vote for moderate Republicans and third party candidates).

Don't take it so personal leogorky Obama lied to a lot of groups and people. Politicans will promise anything to get elected. Although I am not gay I do support your cause and hope that the gay community does come to their senses and turn on the democrats. My reasons are not noble to your cause entirely because there is very little that I like about Obama's other policies as well.

Of course, I was immediately disillusioned by the president when he invited a hate-mongering homophobic minister to preside over the inauguration. Unfortunately, I expected to be disappointed on this matter. All of the candidate lie to the gay community and then abandon them. Picking which candidate to vote for is like deciding whether you want to eat feces or vomit. I'd still choose Obama any day over the hateful Mccain and the dimwitted liar, Palin.
