Palin-Letterman: Culture Wars Redux?

(AP)
By Friday afternoon, there were more than 7.3 million Google entries responding to the search terms "Letterman Palin." No surprise there. This dustup has been the talk of the town all week.

Will anybody remember it by next week?

Probably not, though it's making for great theatre in the meantime.

In part, that's because of the personalities involved. Palin, the hottest celebrity in the Republican firmament and Letterman, the late night talk show host (and my fellow CBS employee) who lampooned the Alaska governor during his standup routine Tuesday night.

Letterman, a famously edgy comic, has since acknowledged that his wisecracking may have been in poor taste but maintains that he denied did not step over the line.

Whether he did, naturally, depends on your vantage point.
For her part, Palin claims she is a victim of a double standard. In her recounting, this is just another episode in a longer history of media mistreatment in which Democrats receive a free ride while Republicans are fair game for savage ridicule. She's found strong support among conservative bloggers, who are apoplectic with Letterman. They echo her belief that his remarks smack of rampant liberal bias in the media world. In one of her posts on about Letterman's comments, the popular conservative blogger, Michelle Malkin, offered the single word headline, "Perv." Not much more to add there.

Now the chairman of the Republican National Committee, Michael Steele, has floated the idea of an informal boycott of the late night comedian's show..

So much for heading into a peaceful weekend.

But this isn't the first time one of these emotionally-charged issues have elbowed their way onto center stage of the national political debate. Most, thankfully, don't stick after a few news cycles and we can get back to more important matters - like debating the metaphysical importance of Susan Boyle. Do you remember the Murphy Brown controversy when Dan Quayle was vice president? If you need to look it up in Wikipedia, I've made my case.

Still, there's a chance that the Palin-Letterman dustup may enjoy a longer lasting shelf life in the pantheon of left-right instant "controversies." To many conservatives, Letterman and his urban cool sensibility represent the epitome of a continuing culture clash where snobbish elites on the two coasts continually look down on the rubes who make up the vast majority of (red) America. Palin supporters are still sore at those same elites for their ridicule of Palin's candidacy during the 2008 presidential campaign.

The appeal to populism has worked for different presidential candidates over the decades, but less so in the 2008 election. The closest we got to anything resembling the culture wars redux may have been Joe the Plumber's 15 minutes of fame. The electorate was more concerned with the economy and the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan but the public's attention span is famously fickle. Palin, who is the best thing the Republicans have going right now, has got bigger ambitions than handing out medals at the Iditarod.

Who knows? Maybe David Letterman just did her the biggest favor he could - outside of a couple of tickets to the "Late Show," that is.

It seems to me that David Letterman has a perverted obsession with Governor Palin. He is so filled with a desire to destroy her that he is attacking her children. This seems to be the newest kind of hate crime...political hate that is so sick, that common decency and common sense are completely lost. It can only be political hate...they won't agree to call this a crime, but it is time for his show to end. He can go on tour and anyone who thinks he is funny can buy a ticket.

According to expense reports, Sarah Palin charged the state of Alaska over $21,000 for her children to travel with her on official business. In fairness to Governor Palin, when she leaves them home alone, they get pregnant.

If you are one who believes in expense reports, and actually reads them then you are beyond hope!!! Have you actually read the expense reports from the Democrats? Evidently Not!!!

Apparently she hasn't heard about the $75,000 that Obama spent of the taxpayer's money for one date with Michelle to New York City a couple of weeks ago and their recent trip to Paris with Sasha and Melia that the taxpayers paid for!

I guess the Palin's weren't upset when the NBC late-night comedians made similar jokes:
"Gov. Palin announced over the weekend that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is five months pregnant. And you thought John Edwards was in trouble before! Now he has really done it. -- "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," 9/2/08
"

" On October 8, 2008, Sarah Palin walked out on the ice with six year old Piper and 13 year old Willow, before the game, Conan O'Brien said, 'Saturday night, Sarah Palin is going to drop the first puck at the Philadelphia Flyers' hockey game. Then Palin will spend the rest of the game trying to keep the hockey players out of her daughter's penalty box.'

Bristol has given birth to TWO fatherless children, including a defective Eskimo mongoloid that her silly mother attempted to pass off as her own

Do you have absolute proof of this? Can you prove it court if you are sued for slander or libel? I doubt it because there is no proof of it! It is a complete lie and you know it! You are just another one who never learned to count to nine! Sarah's obstetrician stated in her message that she issued last fall that Trig was born April 19, 2008. It takes nine months to carry a child to full term. Tripp Johnston was born just EIGHT months later in December and he was not premature! He was a full term nine months baby who weighed over seven pounds. There is no way on earth that Trig could be Bristol's baby! It's not physically possible!

And another thing Trig is not an Eskimo mongoloid! First of all, though, before I go on I want to say that there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with being Eskimo any more than there is anything wrong with being any other race on this planet. You are trying to cast some kind of slur on it like there is something wrong with being Eskimo! However, Trig is only 1/4 Eskimo and you know it!

And another thing children like him are no longer called "mongoloid"! He is a child who was born with Downes Syndrome and that's all he is! There is no stigma against that either except in your mind! Both he and Tripp are as good as yours or any other children!

There is something else that I'd better tell you. I am reporting you to CBS because of your language and your slanderous statement about Bristol Palin. Hopefully they will forward your statement on to the Palin family along with your information that you filed when you registered with CBS to be able to comment in these comment boards and you have to prove in court what you have said!

When he told the joke, it was apparent to any one with a brain that he was talking about her oldest daughter, not the young daughter. Who knows that Palin has 2 other daughters? Why would he make jokes about someone that no one knows or recognizes? What would be so comical about that. It wouldn't. The only explanation would be, he was talking about the daughter that got knocked up by the hockey player

"Any one with a brain" who hasn't been living in a hut in the Amazon rain forest with no communication with the outside world since September knows that Sarah Palin has five children! She has two sons and three daughters!

When some other 'con decides to go for 15 minutes of attention, maybe he/she will take on limbaugh's innumberable attacks against women, of age and otherwise.

That is, if they can get a grip on the comedy that is them...

It seems that the cons only become a feminist when it serves their purpose. And old lush, 'he is just an entertainer and doesn't meant anything by it' or 'that the libs are afraid of lush telling the truth.'

they are so predictable.

Same old tired wisful thinking from the libs.
Can you guys get some new rhetoric going? It's kind boring.

Loks like when those other comedians actually did pick on minors, Sarah was already getting enough attention.

Dave Letterman never did a single joke about Bristol being pregnant up until the time she turned 18 and entered her celebrity life. Yet Other comedians made the same type jokes as Letterman did, while she was 17.

"We're learning more and more about Governor Palin. Apparently her daughter's name is Juno." --Jay Leno

"All the Republicans are heaping praise on Governor Palin. Fred Thompson said, as an actor, he could see them making a movie about Sarah Palin and her family. Didn't they already make that movie? I think it was called 'Knocked Up.'" --Jay Leno

"According to expense reports, Sarah Palin charged the state of Alaska over $21,000 for her children to travel with her on official business. In fairness to Gov. Palin, when she leaves them home alone they get pregnant." --Seth Meyers

"Everybody is trying to find out more about Sarah Palin. Someone was able to hack into Sarah Palin's Yahoo! email account because she hadn't taken the proper security measures. Yeah. So, folks, it's official. No one in the Palin family uses protection." --Conan O'Brien

"This is true. In Alaska, a political activist is trying to get Sarah Palin to release over 1,000 e-mails that she's withholding from public records. She won't release them. Yeah. Apparently, several of the e-mails went unanswered and have the subject line 'Mom, I need to talk to you about birth control.'" --Conan O'Brien

"It's true, John McCain's running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, has revealed that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant. Palin said, 'We should never have introduced her to John Edwards.'" --Conan O'Brien

It doesn't matter! He shouldn't have been joking about either daughter! The Palin children should be off limits to comedians and reporters just as the Obama children are!
Posted by ladypirate2

Meghan mccain was attacked by Lush limpballs, and laura inghram . I guess you were on megans side condemning them for talking about meghan mccain.

Liz cheney has been out dumping on the President Obama, should she be off limits?

Bristol gave 3 interviews with national media, did a cover for People magazine and did a national abstinence tour with Candies.

All three of these daughters of politicians voluntarily entered the public domain. As such they get all the perks and all of the down side of celebrity. As such you become fair game for the comedians.

Listen to what letterman said again and use some common sense. How can A-rod knocked up the 18 year old if she's not there? The 14 year old was at the game!!
.....
Teenage pregnancy is very high and there are no easy answers. Bristol is out there relating her experience and being candor about it. I guess you're the type who liked to make fun of, lets say, recovering alcoholic for helping others to stay off the bottle.

Apparently this took some common sense to understand and lack any.

Bristol made a Candies abstinence tour telling teenagers to abstain, while she had got knocked up. She said that abstinence was not realistic. Now that is funny. That is good enough for her to be joked about. While it may be tasteless, it is just a joke. If Palin did not want her in the public spotlight, she should have never sent her on the abstinence tour, 3 national interviews and a cover page of People.

Nothing funnier then pedophilia and rape about a politician's daughter. Never in US history has a more vile attack been perpetrated upon a innocent child of a politician and CBS is the proud owner of that 'joke'.

I wonder how Letterman would feel about jokes of rape direct towards his child?

Good for you CBS, Plain haters every where are proud of your fine work.
Posted by RexZeitgeist at 11:12 PM : Jun 13, 2009

I agree witn you! People, though, might not make jokes of rape directed at his child. They no doubt will make jokes about his illegitimacy! I wonder how Letterman will feel about that? I wonder how he will like it when one day his son comes home crying from school because someone has made a cruel remark about his illegitimacy? He will know then how Sarah and Todd Palin feel about what he and the other so-called "comedians" have said about their children! As we country folk say Letterman's "chickens are going to come home to roost" and he's not going to like it! His words are going to be handed right back to him someday through the things that are said to his own son and they are going to hurt!

You can repeat this insanity all you want... it doesn't matter. I listened to the show and there is NO doubt he was talking about the Daughter who got knocked up and was parading around the country trying to sell subsentence for the American Taliban... NO DOUBT!

I'm still seeing a lot of posts where people are saying she should have "hidden" her daughter from the public, protected her by keeping her home.

Does anyone really think that would have worked for vicious libs? I don't, my gosh they stampeded Alaska to dig up anything possible. I can see it now, "my daughter Bristol is pregnant, and she is staying home to stay out of the spotlight". Then the media would have portrayed the Palin's as embarrassed of their daughter, hiding her when they should be a family unit, a big cover-up with some more things the Palin's are trying to hide.

Instead they campaigned with the "whole" family like all politicians do (Obama's girls were out front and center as well). Sarah and Todd showed a united front and proudly stood before the country, supporting their daughter and there is absolutely no shame in that.

There is shame in a grown man using teenage girl's as a butt of jokes for ratings. Using them to get at their mother and trying to pretend that ripping on a vulnerable 18 yr old "new" mother as acceptable. Sorry Letterman, I think you are a horses azz AND CBS I USED TO WATCH YOUR NETWORK AND HAVE STOPPED COMPLETELY, I DON'T WANT YOUR PERVERTED ENTERTAINMENT (I'LL GLADLY PASS THIS SENTIMENT ON TO EVERYONE I KNOW).

Sources from the McCain campaign are starting to talk. And they said today that when they were prepping Sarah Palin for the debates, they found out that she thought Africa was a country, not a continent. Now, to be fair to Sarah Palin, it is hard to see Africa from Alaska.
