Father Runs Over Daughter For Being Too "Westernized"

PEORIA, Ariz. (CBS/AP) Police believe a 20-year-old girl was run over in a Phoenix suburb because she had become too "Westernized." And the man they suspect was behind the wheel was her own father, an Iraqi immigrant.

Police say 48-year-old Faleh Hassan Almaleki of Glendale allegedly ran his daughter over Tuesday at an Arizona Department of Economic Security parking lot in Peoria.

The victim, Noor Faleh Almaleki, who lives in Surprise, Az., a Phoenix suburb, remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

A second woman, 43-year-old Amal Edan Khalaf suffered non-life threatening injuries. Police say the women are roommates.

Cynthia Diaz, who witnessed the crash, said Noor Almaleki was unconscious and bleeding from the nose; however, Khalaf was able to communicate.

"I asked her specifically, 'Do you know who did this?'" Diaz said to CBS Affiliate KPHO. "She said yes and she gave a name."

Police said Faleh Almaleki was last seen driving a gray or silver 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with license plate No. ADS-9192.

Why is it that people want to bring culture and race into the issues? Please, he lost control and killed his daughter. He is a murderer! And his race or culture or religion doesn't change that fact! He will be convicted and spend life in prison just like the woman in Texas that drown her children. Nobody talked about her race, religion or culture. She was just completely INSANE. This man is a potential "flight risk" due to the fact that he could just return to Iraq to escape prison here. They need to make sure he doesn't get bail.

While I agree with you on amercia having no clutre and other points of views

there was no reason for him to do what he did he himself gave the imperfect example of the so called freedom here, he partook in everything he did not want for his daughter,
your own words he did not care about culture he gave no concern to religion, we all should take a look at ourselves and live the way we would want our children to live, this is a horrible tragedy, everyone involved could use some closer and put this story to rest
by the way honor killings are not religion(for any one who think they are.

I agree with you too, I wrote to explain that this tragedy has nothing to do with Islam, and replying to those who generalize and judge all from one incident, but they dont generalize when they see everyday news and how Solders raped 14 years iraqi girl then killed her and all her family, thats we are reading CBS blog not right wing blog like Glen Beck and other radical mentalities.

I know the Father we talked few times. First, he is not religious at all, he gambles, drinks and doesnt even care about religion. Second, he is very mild I was surprised when I read the news coz basically he expresses his love to life style here and more... I dont know who choose the word ( too Westernized ) its obviously an attempt to link that to Islamophobia. I think the man if he did it, he just lost his control for a moment when his doughter dont want to talk to him or listen to him (maybe) coz he told me once he talks and and text his kids as friends and even she travelled with him for more than a week cross America just last Summer, so he was very close to her...For those who take this a chance to attack on Muslim or Iraqi , I would excuse them coz they r so ignornat to know about America rather to know about the world, and for those who say everyone lives here must live the tradtions here, just to enlight u ur gov. and stragists bring immigrants and refugees to expand the traditions coz basically u dont have much of it.. and last so those who killed their kids or their love ones , r they American?? should they send back to where??? be better by be good and learn more..peace

Hey piggy are you really that low and retarted that you have to compare anyone that does anything violent with being some kind of repub. extremist, its you that I hear attacking in your posts. one more thing not everything and everybody responds to puppydogs, snowballs, and appologies, sometimes the only thing that gets other people or countries respect and/or for them to listen is a good punch in the mouth or 5000lbs. of napalm as you would put it. It would be nice if you could offer everyone a puppydog and a handshake but unfortunatly the world is not like that. Try picking up a history book every once in a while and you would see that. If it wasn't for the US kicking a** once in a while the title of this country would not be USA it would be Britan or France or Germany or Mexico or should I go on or do you get the point now! No probably not

If every father from Iraq did this to their westernized daughters, there would be hundreds of thousands of murders or attempted murders by these guys every year. This is an isolated incident of a control freak who felt that the only way he could control his daughter was to kill his daughter. That is not cultural, that is a psychological illness. Are there any American born people who have the same psychological malady? Of course. In situations like this, it is very easy to generalize and label a whole population based upon the acts of a few people within that population. As intelligent, critical thinking human beings, we have to fight this tendency of ours to form irrational prejudices. I hope this young woman survives not only her physical injuries, but also the psychological damage caused by knowing that her father did this to her.

Send him back to Iraq!

We need to cut these people off, when they come here to live they need to live by our laws not the country he left - if it was so great why did he come here!

Better yet why did he bring his daughter here if he did not want her exposed to US culture?

Deport his sorry arse after running him over with a HUMMER!!! If he lives send him back I am sure he will get excellent medical care!

Well just exactly what the BLEEP were they doing here if the father did not want his daughter to become "westernized?"

He needs to get his own taste of westernization in one of our Correctional Institutions.

What kind of people are they that try to kill their own offspring???? Send them back where they can practice their medieval customs. We don't need them in North America. They're sick!

The thing that worries me is, who's to say another relative won't try to finish what the father started? That is, if the daughter recovers from her injuries...If the daughter survives, she should change her name, and get help to move away as far as possible.

Well, gee, folks. I keep hearing "Honor diversity!" How much diversity can we tolerate? You don't like what your daughter does, so kill her, right? She might turn out to be a ****, so circumcise her, right? The neighbors might disagree with you, so blow them up, right? Sounds ok to me.

Oh, and we will be blaming George W. Bush for a lot longer than 20 years. Too bad he and his whole administration aren't doing hard time.

A nice long stretch in a maximum security prison might just do this guy some good.

If nothing else, he'll probably learn something about being subservient to someone who is stronger than himself...learn what it is like to to not have any right of self-determination or a choice in who he is turned out (rented) to.

He'll be just another *****...and that sounds like justice to me!

How is Dad going to make any money off his daughter later by selling her to an older man when she refuses to be enslaved?

I would feel guilty for about 10 minutes if I yelled at your kids. Or maybe not, I have little remorse.

Anyone who chooses to make a permanent move from one country and its culture to another - as this man and his family did - has the obligation to leave his birth culture at the doorstep and adopt the culture and values of his new home. That's job one for the new immigrant; you want to live in the "West" then, by golly, you make the effort to become "Westernized".

What offends me most was not so much Hassan Almaleki's failure to assimilate himself because that is tough to do and turning out a lifestyle one was raised in doesn't happen overnight. No, the real outrage was his intentional clinging to the ways of his birth society and punishing his daughter for doing what she was obligated to do in the first place.

You have a good point, but this was beyond, "punishment".
Does your idea of "punishment" include attempted murder?
by docpeter1953 October 22, 2009 12:05 PM EDT
No, the real outrage is, his daughter appears to be really cute.

MAYBE HE TOOK A LOOK AT THE REPUBLI'CON'

PARTY AND DECIDE THAT HE HAD MADE A MISTAKE COMING HERE
by lloydbest1 October 22, 2009 2:42 PM EDT
To Sandy19731:

The whole situation involving immigrants who can't - or in Hassan's case, won't - assimilate is a hot button issue with me. I can get really hostile with those who feel their culture is so superior to any other that they cling to it even when it is as much out of the context of the new country they move to as Iraq is to the U.S. (or, for that matter, the other way around!).
If I shared with you how I really felt and in the tone and verbage that matched those feelings, I would be thrown off these boards faster than it would take to talk about it.
Therefore I am using milder language than that which might be appropriate to the magnitude of the offense.

To answer your question...No, of course not but if that young girl dies, and there is a good chance she might, then I believe her father should be brought up on murder charges and have them aggrivated by assigning his action as a hate crime.

Why did this cowardly man bring his family to the US?? Please, deport him back to his homeland, he is a menace to our society and a disgrace to the human race. Sick and demented people seem to be coming out of the woodwork like the cockroaches that they are.

It is a sad fact that many American born citizens kill their children, their neighbors, their husands and wives, nationality has NOTHING to do with it! The murder rate in this country is horrific.

@ibsteve2u

What does a crazed Iraqi man running over his daughter have ANYTHING to do with Bush?

Typical liberal deflection.

Bush is gone! Or are you going to continue to blame him 20 years from now?

RE: Marc

Blaming GWB for 20 years sounds about right.
