Day 87: Obama Travels To Mexico, Declines To Prosecute CIA Officials

On his eighty-seventh day in office, President Obama traveled to Mexico, where he met with President Felipe Calderon. Both leaders are facing an uptick in violence tied to drug trafficking on the U.S.-Mexican border.

"I will not pretend that this is Mexico's responsibility alone," he said. "Demand for these drugs in the United States is what is helping keep these cartels in business…we have responsibilities as well. We have to do our part."

In a press release, the president also announced that his administration would not prosecute CIA officials for using harsh techniques such as waterboarding to interrogate terrorism suspects during the Bush administration.

The White House also released four memos outlining controversial CIA interrogation tactics. Among them: Sleep-deprivation, prolonged shackling, threats to a detainee's family, and putting suspects in a box filled with insects.

"This is a time for reflection, not retribution," Mr. Obama said. "…We have been through a dark and painful chapter in our history. But at a time of great challenges and disturbing disunity, nothing will be gained by spending our time and energy laying blame for the past."
